Job Summary
The Debt Collector is responsible for the proactive monitoring, negotiation, and administration of payment arrangements to recover outstanding funds. The role requires a strategic approach to managing debtor accounts, from initial tracing to the preparation of legal documentation. The successful incumbent must balance professional assertiveness with compassion while ensuring all activities comply with the Debt Collectors Act and internal company policies.
Key Performance Areas & Responsibilities
1. Debt Recovery & Negotiation

Strategy Implementation: Formulate and execute effective strategies to recover outstanding payments from delinquent accounts.

Negotiation: Actively negotiate structured payment plans, payoff deadlines, and settlement terms with debtors.

Tracing: Utilize available tools and resources to trace missing debtors and update contact information.
2. Legal & Administrative Support

Documentation: Draft and prepare legal documents and formal collection correspondence in accordance with legislative requirements.

Account Analysis: Investigate, identify, and resolve account discrepancies, including processing refunds and adjustments.

Compliance: Ensure all debt collection processes strictly adhere to legal requirements and internal standard operating procedures (SOPs).
3. Monitoring & Reporting

Account Monitoring: Conduct daily reviews of debtor accounts to identify overdue or high-risk profiles.

Data Management: Maintain and update internal databases, debtor files, and recovery reports accurately and timeously.

Reporting: Prepare detailed reports for both external clients and internal departments regarding collection progress and delinquent behavior.
Qualification and Skills Requirements
To be considered for this associate-level role, candidates must meet the following criteria:

Education: Matric / Grade 12. Currently studying towards a relevant qualification is advantageous.

Professional Registration: Registration with the Council for Debt Collectors is highly advantageous.

Experience: A minimum of 5 years’ experience in a debt collection environment (Essential).

Language Proficiency: Bilingual fluency in Afrikaans and English is required for effective client and stakeholder communication.

Technical Skills: Strong understanding of statements, debits, credits, and reconciliations. Proficiency in MS Office Suite and experience with debt collection software is preferred.
