About the South African Army
The South African Army plays a vital role in national defence, operational readiness and facility upkeep across all military bases. The 9 South African Infantry Battalion (9 SAI), based in Cape Town, requires a dedicated and physically fit Groundsman to support the upkeep of training areas, gardens, lawns and shooting ranges.
This role is suitable for individuals who are hardworking, reliable, and committed to maintaining high standards of cleanliness and grounds care.
Position Overview
The Groundsman will be responsible for maintaining gardens, lawns, training environments and shooting range facilities. Working as part of a team, the successful candidate will perform routine outdoor tasks, operate basic gardening equipment, and ensure that the grounds remain safe, neat and operationally ready.
Key Responsibilities
- Cultivate and maintain garden areas.
- Maintain the general appearance and cleanliness of the shooting range and surrounding areas.
- Assist with the maintenance of shooting-related facilities and equipment.
- Prepare soil for planting and assist with garden layout where required.
- Maintain flower beds and landscaped areas through fertilising, weeding, pruning and irrigation.
- Mow lawns, trim edges and perform general grounds maintenance.
- Load and unload equipment, materials and refuse.
- Remove refuse from the terrain and ensure proper disposal or burning where instructed.
- Keep all unit grounds neat, safe and presentable.
- Safely operate and maintain tools and equipment.
- Apply all Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) measures when performing duties.
Minimum Requirements
- ABET qualification (minimum).
- No previous experience required.
- Ability to communicate verbally in English.
- Basic understanding of health and safety procedures.
- Knowledge of basic gardening tools, cleaning equipment and low-complexity machinery.
- Ability to perform physical and routine tasks.
- Ability to work independently and within a team.
- Basic numeracy and literacy skills.
- Must demonstrate reliability, punctuality, honesty, endurance and practical thinking.
