Job Description

The Laboratory Assistant role at PathCare involves managing the receipt, processing, and distribution of specimens while maintaining strict quality standards and turnaround times. You will handle a variety of specimen types, prepare them for testing, manage incomplete or on-hold reports, and coordinate the shipping of samples to reference laboratories when required.

Your role is client-focused, ensuring that queries are addressed professionally and efficiently, and that all interactions reflect PathCare’s values of integrity, accuracy, and service excellence. You will also maintain accurate records of specimen movements, troubleshoot issues with sample processing, and work closely with colleagues to ensure laboratory operations remain smooth and efficient.

This position requires the ability to work independently as well as part of a collaborative team. You will need to adapt to a fast-paced environment, meet strict deadlines, and handle urgent requests with precision. Role Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • Grade 12 (Matric)

  • Registered with the HPCSA as a qualified Laboratory Assistant

  • Relevant experience in a busy specimen reception or laboratory environment

  • Ability to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays

  • Fluency in English, with an understanding of Afrikaans

Skills Requirements

  • Initiative and problem-solving ability

  • Competence in using computers, with experience in Meditech advantageous

  • Ability to manage on-hold lists, incomplete reports, and telephonic result reporting

  • Positive attitude, resilience, and ability to work independently or in a team

Key Responsibilities

  • Receiving and processing specimens accurately

  • Preparing specimens for testing and ensuring proper labelling and documentation

  • Distributing specimens efficiently while maintaining acceptable turnaround times

  • Handling and resolving client queries in a professional manner

  • Shipping specimens to reference laboratories as required

  • Managing on-hold lists and incomplete reports

  • Supporting laboratory staff and contributing to smooth daily operations
