The 2 Field Engineer Regiment is a critical unit within the South African Army, providing engineering, construction, and logistical support. The Regiment maintains its facilities, grounds, and operational areas to ensure readiness, safety, and a professional environment for personnel and operations.


Position Overview

The Groundsman is responsible for maintaining and cultivating the Regiment’s outdoor areas. This role involves gardening, landscaping, irrigation, maintenance of lawns and flower beds, and supporting general upkeep of the base to ensure a safe and visually appealing environment.


Key Responsibilities

  • Cultivate garden areas, including planting trees, shrubs, flowers, and other plants.

  • Prepare soil for planting and maintain flower and plant beds through fertilizing, irrigating, weeding, and pruning.

  • Mow lawns, trim edges, and maintain neatness of unit areas.

  • Load and unload equipment and materials needed for grounds maintenance.

  • Irrigate lawns and prune trees according to schedule.

  • Remove refuse from terrain and transport to designated dumps or dispose of appropriately.

  • Maintain structures on grounds, including parking areas, sports fields, shooting ranges, ditches, and gutters.

  • Clean and treat swimming pools with chemicals.

  • Maintain fences and prepare grounds before and after functions.

  • Measure and apply fertilizers and poisons as instructed.

  • Use, manage, and maintain gardening equipment and machinery; check serviceability and report faults.

  • Follow all safety precautions when operating machinery and equipment.


Minimum Requirements

  • ABET qualification or equivalent.

  • No previous experience required.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in English (verbal).

  • Basic numeracy and literacy skills.

  • Basic knowledge of health and safety standards.

  • Knowledge of gardening and maintenance equipment.

  • Ability to operate cleaning and gardening machines.

  • Ability to work independently or in a team.

  • Ability to perform routine tasks and prioritise work efficiently.
