About the Water Control Aid Role
The Department of Water and Sanitation (DWS) manages South Africaβs water resources and infrastructure, ensuring effective water distribution, flood control, and maintenance of dams, canals, and sluices. The Water Control Aid position is vital for the smooth operation of water schemes, providing on-site management and assistance with water distribution and maintenance.
Water Control Aids play a key operational role in ensuring that government water infrastructure functions efficiently, safely, and in line with national regulations. The role is ideal for candidates interested in practical water management, maintenance, and fieldwork in environmental and civil infrastructure.
Position Overview
Water Control Aids are responsible for monitoring, maintaining, and managing water distribution infrastructure such as dams, canals, sluices, and measurement structures. The role requires keen attention to detail, strong observational skills, and the ability to perform manual and maintenance tasks in line with occupational safety standards.
Key Responsibilities
- Operate sluices in accordance with scheme regulations.
- Maintain water distribution sheets and records as per scheme regulations.
- Conduct daily inspections of dams, canals, and related infrastructure.
- Perform minor repairs on structures, sluices, fencing, and equipment.
- Assist in clearing blocked pipes and canals to ensure smooth water flow.
- Remove algae, water grass, and debris from canals regularly.
- Report holes, cracks, and defects in embankments, measuring structures, and sluices.
- Ensure stagnant water is identified and reported to prevent contamination or hazards.
- Maintain cleanliness of sluice numbers, canal grids, gauge plates, and surrounding areas.
- Lock and secure post boxes, equipment, and storage areas at all times.
- Perform routine painting, minor washout repairs, and maintenance to ensure infrastructure longevity.
- Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety guidelines while performing all tasks.
- Support the Water Control Officer and assist with operational and maintenance tasks as required.
Minimum Requirements
- NQF Level 2 or equivalent (ABET).
- A higher qualification will be an added advantage.
- Strong verbal, writing, and reading skills.
- Basic understanding of water distribution and management for government water works.
- Basic knowledge of flood control, record-keeping, and occupational safety.
- Ability to perform physical tasks in the field, including manual maintenance and inspections.
Skills and Competencies
- Knowledge of occupational health and safety practices.
- Ability to follow water management regulations and protocols.
- Competence in minor maintenance, equipment handling, and field inspections.
- Attention to detail and ability to identify infrastructure defects.
- Strong organizational and reporting skills.
