About the High Court Handyman Role

The High Court of South Africa provides vital infrastructure and office services to ensure that justice is delivered efficiently. The Handyman positions are essential to maintaining safe, functional, and well-maintained court facilities. These roles are ideal for semi-skilled individuals with a versatile knowledge of trades such as plumbing, electrical work, carpentry, bricklaying, or mechanical work.

Working as a Handyman at the High Court offers the opportunity to gain multi-trade experience while supporting the operational efficiency of critical public service institutions. This position combines practical skills with problem-solving, customer service, and administrative responsibilities.


Position Overview

High Court Handymen are responsible for executing general building maintenance, office repairs, and minor infrastructure work. This includes relocating office furniture, unblocking basins and drains, repairing equipment, and ensuring compliance with the Occupational Health and Safety Act. Candidates must be flexible, keen to learn, and physically capable of handling various manual tasks.


Key Responsibilities

  • Provide handyman services at the court, including relocation of office equipment and coordination of damaged furniture disposal.
  • Conduct minor repairs in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, or mechanical tasks.
  • Fit and fix doors, locks, plugs, globes, and other office infrastructure items.
  • Execute routine inspections of buildings weekly, monthly, and quarterly.
  • Maintain records of all inspections and repairs.
  • Ensure that all work complies with Occupational Health and Safety standards.
  • Coordinate with service providers for repairs, sign job cards, and oversee service quality.
  • Facilitate repairs to water leaks and minor drainage issues.
  • Ensure office furniture and equipment are safe, functional, and well-maintained.
  • Accompany landlords and contractors during repairs and maintenance activities.
  • Implement general maintenance in kitchens, restrooms, and office spaces.
  • Support building administration, infrastructure inspections, and record-keeping.

Minimum Requirements

  • ABET (Grade 10) or equivalent.
  • Relevant experience in semi-skilled trades (plumbing, electrical, carpentry, bricklaying, or mechanical).
  • Willingness to perform all other related trade duties.
  • Physically healthy and able to perform manual work.
  • Trade certificates in plumbing, electrical, carpentry, bricklaying, or mechanical work are an advantage.

Skills and Competencies

  • Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety regulations.
  • Ability to operate power tools safely and effectively.
  • Competent in MS Office applications (Word, Outlook, PowerPoint, Excel).
  • Office administration and building infrastructure knowledge.
  • Understanding of legislative framework governing Public Service.
  • Verbal and written communication skills.

  • Computer literacy and MS Teams proficiency.
