About the Road Accident Fund (RAF)
The Road Accident Fund (RAF) plays a vital role in South Africa’s transport and social security landscape by providing appropriate cover to all road users within the borders of the country. The RAF is committed to compensating and rehabilitating persons injured as a result of motor vehicle accidents in a timely, fair, and compassionate manner. The organisation also actively promotes road safety to reduce the occurrence of accidents on South African roads.

Role Purpose
The Claims Officer will provide critical support to Managers by managing and overseeing RAF litigated matters handled by RAF-appointed attorneys. The successful candidates will be responsible for investigating, evaluating, negotiating, and settling claims effectively and efficiently to contribute to reduced legal costs and timely resolution of matters.

Key Performance Areas
Claims Assessment and Settlement
-
Conduct preliminary assessment of litigated files
-
Investigate, evaluate, and settle claims using technical knowledge and negotiation skills
-
Report complex or high-risk claims for reinsurance purposes
-
Perform assessment and settlement of:
-
Loss of earnings
-
General damages (old and new Act)
-
Loss of support
-
Funeral expenses
-
Medical expenses
-
-
Negotiate and finalize claims to ensure efficient, cost-effective resolutions
-
Facilitate block settlements where appropriate
-
Appoint assessors for merit and quantum verification
-
Assess and report on writs and bridges
-
Load court orders and approve settlement offers
Litigation Support and File Preparation
-
Escalate matters with litigious disputes to the pleadings process
-
Verify and analyze data to support sound litigation decisions
-
Provide RAF attorneys with complete file contents for trial preparation
-
Collaborate with RAF attorneys on litigation strategy and trial preparation
-
Ensure adherence to High Court practice notes
-
Evaluate outstanding information and follow up until all documents are received
-
Assess expert medico-legal reports and claims for possible settlement
-
Maintain regular follow-up and diarising processes
Reporting and Outcome Management

Report on trial outcomes and out-of-court settlements
-
Examine claims investigated by RAF attorneys

Investigate questionable claims to determine authorization for settlements or tenders
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
-
A four-year Degree in Law or equivalent
-
Admission as an Attorney of the High Court or Advocate
Experience

Minimum 3 years relevant experience in claims or litigation environment
