Position Overview
The Mining Shift Boss plays a crucial leadership role in managing underground and surface mining activities, ensuring that all operations meet safety, quality, and productivity targets. The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising miners and support teams, maintaining compliance with Mine Health and Safety Act regulations, and driving continuous improvement within the production environment.
This position demands a highly skilled individual with strong technical expertise, exceptional leadership skills, and a commitment to operational excellence.
Key Responsibilities
Safety, Health, Environment, and Quality (SHEQ)

Identify and assess levels of operational and environmental risk within the work area.

Apply and monitor control measures for all identified risks, ensuring compliance with SHEQ standards.

Lead investigations and reporting of SHEQ incidents through the company’s Integrated Management System (IMS).

Promote a zero-harm culture and reinforce Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) compliance.
People Management
-
Supervise a team of miners and ensure a productive, safe, and motivated workforce.

Maintain labour stability and oversee recruitment and retention strategies.

Monitor team performance, discipline, and attendance.

Conduct career development discussions and implement Individual Development Plans (IDPs).

Provide coaching, mentoring, and continuous feedback to enhance team performance.
Operational Management
-
Inspect all mine workings regularly as required by the MHSA, ensuring all areas are safe and productive.

Oversee daily production activities, including blasting, drilling, and face inspections.

Ensure all blasted panels are measured, plotted, and recorded accurately.

Manage equipment, materials, and production resources to meet daily and monthly targets.

Implement tactical and operational plans aligned with the mine’s overall production strategy.
Customer and Stakeholder Relations

Maintain professional relationships with internal departments, contractors, and external stakeholders.

Ensure customer satisfaction by meeting quality and delivery standards.
Financial and Performance Accountability

Monitor and control section costs in line with budget parameters.

Drive operational efficiency and cost reduction through continuous improvement initiatives.

Contribute to the company’s growth by achieving production targets and shareholder objectives.
Minimum Requirements

Grade 12 / N3 Certificate

Blasting Certificate or MQA Level 3 Rock Breaker Certificate

Shift Overseer Certificate (Mining)

Appointment under Mineral Act Regulation 15.1

Minimum 5 years’ relevant mining production experience, including 2 years in a supervisory role

Competent A & B Certificates

Proven medical fitness as per company requirements

Microsoft Office proficiency
