
Join a National Agricultural Initiative with the Agricultural Research Council
The Agricultural Research Council – Tropical and Subtropical Crops (ARC-TSC) is seeking qualified candidates to fill two (2) positions for Research Support Assistant: Plant Improvement, offered as a three-year fixed term contract. These positions are based in Ncera, Eastern Cape, and are part of a pioneering agricultural project funded by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development.
This opportunity is designed for individuals who want to build hands-on experience in plant research and agricultural development while working with some of the country’s leading scientists and field experts.
Position Summary
The selected candidates will assist with practical research support functions, including crop management, pest control, and data collection. You’ll be instrumental in maintaining field and greenhouse experiments and ensuring accurate reporting for long-term plant improvement initiatives.
Primary Duties and Responsibilities
- Assist in land preparation, seed counting, and placement of planting markers
- Conduct planting, fertilization, weeding, watering, and harvesting for both glasshouse and field trials
- Monitor for pests such as mealybugs, thrips, scale insects, fruit flies, and mites, and assist with pesticide application
- Help process plant samples for disease and pest analysis
- Carry out manual data capturing and reporting to supervisors
- Maintain glasshouses, equipment, and general farm areas
- Follow proper procedures for the correct use of research tools and consumables
- Support the organization of scientific workshops or events
- Comply with Safety, Health, Environment (SHE)/Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) standards
- Provide verbal and written feedback on daily tasks and progress
Minimum Requirements
- Matric / Grade 12 certificate
- Understanding of basic agricultural practices
- Strong reading, writing, and communication skills
- A valid South African driver’s license will be an advantage
- Familiarity with health and safety procedures in an agricultural setting
- Ability to work both independently and as part of a team
- Must be willing to work in outdoor conditions, including adverse weather
- Prior exposure to research or farm environments is beneficial
Work Environment
This project is based in Ncera, Eastern Cape, and preference will be given to local residents. Work includes both indoor (laboratory/glasshouse) and outdoor (field) settings. Applicants should be physically fit, proactive, and able to follow scientific guidance.
