The Agricultural Research Council – Tropical and Subtropical Crops (ARC-TSC) invites applications for the position of Research Support Assistant: Plant Improvement, offered as a three-year fixed term contract. Based in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, this opportunity is ideal for passionate individuals seeking hands-on agricultural research experience in a professional environment.

This project is funded by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, focusing on innovative solutions to enhance plant growth, improve seed quality, and advance horticultural practices. A total of four (4) positions are available.

Job Overview

The Research Support Assistants will be essential in implementing research and nursery practices, from planting to harvesting. You will support scientific experiments, care for plants, maintain greenhouses and tools, and contribute to data collection efforts for evaluations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with planting seeds and seedlings, harvesting fruit, and extracting seeds
  • Apply irrigation, fertilizers, and pest control solutions as instructed
  • Conduct routine sampling and evaluations under the guidance of researchers and supervisors
  • Maintain cleanliness and proper function of glasshouses, tools, and equipment
  • Prepare soil and assist in general nursery upkeep and manual labor
  • Support the organization of scientific events and field demonstrations
  • Ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety standards, including use of PPE

Minimum Requirements

  • Matric / Grade 12 qualification
  • Basic understanding of agricultural or horticultural practices
  • Familiarity with manual farm equipment and safe operating procedures
  • Strong teamwork and communication abilities (written and verbal)
  • Valid South African driver’s license is advantageous
  • Willingness to work in outdoor and varying weather conditions
  • Good grasp of health and safety requirements in an agricultural setting

Location and Working Environment

This role is based in Nelspruit, Mpumalanga, and applicants from this region will be given preference. The position involves a combination of outdoor physical labor, nursery and glasshouse work, and coordination with research teams and supervisors.
