Role Overview

Smollan is currently hiring a Product Consultant (PTA) to be based in Gauteng, focusing on consumer electronics and telecommunications product lines. This role is ideal for an energetic and customer-focused individual with strong sales acumen and a passion for technology. As a Product Consultant, you will be responsible for promoting, demonstrating, and training store staff and customers on high-end electronic devices while ensuring in-store compliance with merchandising, POP, and promotional requirements.

The role is field-based, requiring interaction with shoppers, store managers, and retail staff, and involves consistently monitoring stock levels, enhancing visibility, and supporting in-store sales efforts.

Key Responsibilities

Product Availability and In-Store Compliance

  • Ensure product availability at the point of sale and manage returns or damaged stock processes

  • Check pricing regularly and report anomalies related to standard pricing, promotional pricing, and competitor pricing

  • Oversee the effective management of demo software on all live electronic display units

Training and Shopper Engagement

  • Train store staff on product specifications, features, and sales techniques

  • Actively engage shoppers in the store to demonstrate product benefits and convert foot traffic into sales

  • Support store sales staff in increasing conversions and outperforming competitor brands

Visual Merchandising and POP Implementation

  • Implement and maintain point-of-purchase (POP) materials as per client specifications

  • Identify in-store promotional opportunities to increase product visibility and negotiate with store managers for high-traffic display areas

  • Increase forward share, shelf share, and floor share of allocated products

  • Allocate more space to fast-moving stock and promote clearance of slow-moving stock

Promotional Campaign Execution

  • Implement promotions in line with head office directives and ensure timely execution

  • Monitor stock levels before, during, and after campaigns to avoid stockouts or overstocks

  • Maintain and rotate promotional materials to ensure freshness and impact

Administrative Excellence

  • Submit all required reports accurately and on time, including promotional feedback, competitor tracking, and store visit logs

  • Utilize handheld devices and internal systems to capture store activity and execute returns processes

  • Communicate campaign performance, promotional exceptions, and stock issues to relevant stakeholders

  • Maintain company assets and demo equipment in line with Smollan’s operational standards

Customer Service and Professionalism

  • Provide excellent customer service to both internal (store staff, sales teams) and external (shoppers) stakeholders

  • Take full ownership of personal development, sales targets, and in-field responsibilities

  • Practice effective time management, route planning, and professionalism in all store engagements

Minimum Requirements

Educational Qualifications

  • Matric Certificate (Grade 12)

  • Relevant Diploma or NQF Level 5 qualification in Sales, Marketing, or related field

Experience

  • 2 to 3 years of sales experience in Telecommunications or Consumer Electronics retail environments

Skills and Attributes

  • Strong sales acumen and closing ability

  • Understanding of basic marketing principles

  • Excellent customer service orientation

  • Proficient communication skills (verbal and written)

  • Computer literacy (Microsoft Office Suite)

  • Administrative and reporting capabilities

  • Professional conduct and high attention to detail
