Role Purpose
The Despatch Controller is responsible for executing the fuel distribution strategy and ensuring that all deliveries comply with Sasol’s quality, safety, environmental, and legal standards. This role manages the timely and accurate dispatch of fuel products to customers, overseeing operational challenges such as product shortages, labour strikes, and system disruptions. The Despatch Controller also ensures strict adherence to governance and compliance, including the prevention of economic crime such as fuel theft. This position is critical in maintaining efficient fuel supply operations while safeguarding workplace safety and customer satisfaction.
Key Responsibilities

Ensure compliance with all company policies regarding overtime, including emergency overtime approvals

Develop and support subordinate employees through performance development plans and enforce disciplinary procedures when required

Manage employee absenteeism and promote wellness programs such as Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) to maintain a reliable workforce and fleet
-
Coordinate accurate and timely execution of all fuel deliveries using both company-owned and contractor fleets

Maintain effective communication with the Logistics Command Centre (LCC) and oversee shipment packs, ensuring delivery sequences are followed as per LCC directives

Conduct briefings and debriefings for Fuel Distribution Operators (FDO) to align on delivery schedules and safety protocols

Report, log, and investigate all operational incidents, recommending corrective and preventative actions

Monitor and manage operating costs, including overtime, travel expenses, and personal protective equipment (PPE) costs

Drive cost-saving initiatives, such as optimizing the use of internal drivers over external contractors

Identify operational risks and ensure compliance with Occupational Health and Safety Act (OHSACT) requirements by implementing preventive measures

Oversee compliance with Safety, Health, Environment, Risk, and Quality (SHERQ) audits and develop action plans to improve results

Ensure prompt and accurate submission of all customer documentation and investigate any discrepancies

Guarantee compliance with legislation such as the National Road Traffic Act (AARTO), labour laws, ISO, and OHSAS standards

Implement measures to prevent economic crime, including theft of fuel by drivers or other personnel

Participate in contingency planning for labor strikes, price fluctuations, and product shortages to minimize operational disruption

Apply evidence-based safety practices in all operations to ensure a safe working environment

Embed Sasol Group’s risk management philosophy and enterprise risk management framework into daily operations

Foster positive relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure effective control measures and operational success

Continuously develop personal skills and track progress against personal development goals
Formal Education and Experience
-
High School Diploma or equivalent qualification
-
Minimum of 3 years relevant experience in logistics, dispatch control, or supply chain operations
Required Skills and Competencies

Effective communication skills, both verbal and written, to engage with teams and stakeholders

Strong knowledge of load transportation, traffic, and vehicle planning

Customer-focused mindset to ensure service excellence and stakeholder satisfaction

Ability to monitor and control operational processes and logistics interfaces efficiently

Accountable and action-oriented with a focus on achieving results and operational accuracy

Analytical skills to perform logistics administration and risk assessments
