Role Overview
We are looking for a dynamic and experienced Assistant Store Manager to support the leadership of our Econo Foods Retail Store in Alberton, located in Johannesburg’s East Rand. This full-time role involves a strong combination of people management, operational oversight, and strategic retail execution.
The Assistant Store Manager will work closely with the Store Manager to ensure store targets are achieved, operations are executed efficiently, and customers receive exceptional service at every touchpoint. The successful candidate will also play a key role in driving sales, reducing risk and shrinkage, maintaining high store standards, and leading a high-performance team.
Key Responsibilities
Sales and Customer Service

Drive sales through effective merchandising, promotions, and in-store displays

Ensure world-class customer service is maintained at all times

Monitor product availability, pricing accuracy, and store cleanliness
Store Operations

Assist with receiving stock, stock counts, and managing inventory, including expiry tracking

Oversee daily operations such as opening and closing procedures, cash-ups, and float preparations

Ensure compliance with health, hygiene, and food safety regulations

Maintain high standards in merchandising, store appearance, and stock rotation
People Management

Recruit, train, and mentor store team members in line with the HO HOLA culture

Supervise staff performance and create a motivating, inclusive work environment

Conduct regular coaching, performance reviews, and handle HR-related tasks
Financial and Administrative Control

Monitor cash handling procedures, daily banking, and financial documentation
-
Analyze sales reports, identify trends, and suggest initiatives for revenue growth

Implement cost-saving and shrinkage prevention strategies
Stakeholder Engagement

Build strong relationships with customers, suppliers, and internal departments

Act as a key contact point when the Store Manager is unavailable
-
Ensure smooth communication and workflow within the team
Qualifications and Experience
-
Matric certificate (Grade 12) is essential; a tertiary qualification in retail or business management is advantageous
-
Minimum 3–5 years’ experience in retail management, preferably in FMCG or frozen foods retail

Demonstrated experience in team leadership, stock control, and store operations

Proven track record in meeting sales targets and delivering exceptional service

A valid driver’s license and own transport is preferred
