Role Summary

As an Environmental Management & Compliance Officer, you will monitor, enforce, and report on environmental compliance in accordance with the National Environmental Management Act, 2008, and other related laws. Your duties will involve site inspections, reporting environmental infractions, supporting enforcement actions, and maintaining regulatory compliance within municipal boundaries.

Minimum Qualifications and Requirements

To be considered, applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • A Diploma or Degree in Environmental Management or Environmental Science

  • 2 to 5 years of relevant work experience in environmental regulation or compliance

  • Sound understanding of environmental legislative frameworks

  • Report writing and investigative skills are essential

  • Experience in the control or monitoring of pollution from industrial or development activities is highly advantageous

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct regular site inspections and environmental investigations

  • Identify non-compliant developments and ensure adherence to NEMA, 2008

  • Monitor and verify compliance with Environmental Authorizations

  • Compile detailed reports related to environmental impacts and compliance

  • Maintain a complaints register and follow up on public environmental grievances

  • Administer and enforce municipal environmental by-laws and policies

  • Identify environmental risks and propose appropriate remedial actions

  • Prepare legal documentation including affidavits and summons for compliance enforcement

  • Support any additional environmental compliance responsibilities as delegated

Occupational Competencies

  • Excellent working knowledge of South African environmental legislation

  • Effective communication, presentation, and report-writing skills

  • Proven ability in performance monitoring and handling budgetary responsibilities

  • Experience in industrial pollution control or Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs)

  • Ability to work independently and take initiative within a regulatory framework

  • Commitment to ethical conduct and public service values
