JOB PURPOSE:

The Manager: Pre-University Academy is an Academic Member of the University of Pretoria’s Mamelodi Campus and part of the management team. The incumbent’s responsibilities includes overseeing the pre-university awareness and readiness programmes which have been organised under the rubric of the PUA. The incumbent will assist the Head of Research and Postgraduate Education in developing the vision and mission of the PUA, develop the programmes and manage the offerings within the PUA with a view to the PUA becoming self-sustaining in line with the anchor strategy of the Mamelodi Campus, the Mamelodi Collaborative. S/he will be responsible for co-ordination and collaboration with the relevant support units and faculties within the University as well as various stakeholders, the Department of Basic Education, local schools in Mamelodi and surrounding areas, including civil society, local government, funding agencies as well as other universities locally and internationally.  Facilitate STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) Educator within community schools and manage staff. Work with the relevant faculties involved in the Mamelodi Collaborative with respect to ensuring support for the programmes primarily through students that carry out credit–bearing community based modules in the Mamelodi community and on the Campus. Assist the Head of Community–Based Research and Postgraduate Education and the Dean in planning and preparation of the annual programme and associated research of the PUA aligned with the faculty plan and monitor associated indicators and expenditure.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

Responsibilities will include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Development and Management of the Pre-University Academy (PUA):
    • Direct, co-ordinate and further develop the programmes of the PUA as informed by the UP Strategic Plan 2017-2021, the new strategic vision and growth of the Campus and priorities outlined in the Faculty / Campus Plan for 2017 -2021;
  • Development of curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular programmes of the PUA:
    • Direct, co-ordinate and further develop the curricular, co-curricular and extracurricular training programmes from grades 8-12 of the PUA as informed by the priorities in the Campus Plan;
  • Streamline and co-ordinate the STEM level, 1 2 and 3 interventions for collective impact:
    • Develop, revise and manage the agreements with relevant partners and participants. Ensure programmes are implemented and run in line with the strategic objective of Mamelodi Campus;
  • People Management:
    • Manage staff that report to you in line with UP policies and procedures;
  • Liaison and Stakeholder Relationship Management:
    • Foster and preserve relationships between all the stakeholders within the educational ecosystem in Mamelodi, especially the principals, STEM teachers and LO teachers, deputy Deans and research leaders of the faculties involved in the Campus;
  • Financial Management:
    • Plan and manage the budget relating to programmes.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

  • Master’s degree in a STEM field, with a postgraduate certificate in Education;

OR

  • Master’s degree in STEM Education with an honours degree in one of the STEM fields;
  • Five years’ teaching experience in pre-university programmes;
  • Three years’ experience in:
    • Management in a pre-university programme;
    • Evidence of writing reports for external funding;
    • The co-ordination of  STEM academic research projects;
    • Liaising with principals and teachers in relation to academic enrichment in STEM;
  • Valid code EB/08 driver’s licence.

REQUIRED COMPETENCIES (SKILLS, KNOWLEDGE AND BEHAVIOURAL ATTRIBUTES):

  • Thorough knowledge and understanding of higher education research and research management landscape;
  • Thorough understanding of the challenges in STEM fields in the schooling system;
  • Good skills for academic planning, financial planning, staff performance management and co-ordination of all other operational aspects of a research programme;
  • Experience in developing relationships with school principals and subject facilitators; 
  • Administrative skills;
  • Computer literacy (Ms Office: Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Email and  Web applications);
  • Communication skills;
  • Organisational and coordination skills;
  • Good conflict management skills;
  • Willing to work overtime and over weekend when necessary.

ADDED ADVANTAGES AND PREFERENCES:

  • PhD in STEM field with a postgraduate certificate in Education;

OR

  • PhD in STEM Education with an honours degree in one of the STEM fields;
  • Five years’ experience in qualitative and quantitative research data analysis.

The annual remuneration package will be commensurate with the incumbent’s level of appointment, as determined by UP policy guidelines. UP subscribes to the BESTMED and UMVUZO medical aid schemes and contributes 50% of the applicable monthly premium.
