Job Description
Purpose of Role
The Project Manager – Mining will be responsible for Project studies from concept to feasibility, managing and monitoring the execution, finance, governance of the project in all the phases. The incumbent will be responsible for the role of developing a complete understanding of the contract and any relevant subcontracts in order to provide full support to the project management team.
Role Context
- Ensure Safety, Health and Environment (SHE) is emphasized throughout all phases of the project
- Lead the preparation of a written scope of facilities and services required
- Collaborate with other Project team members in the project and define the project staffing requirements and coordinating staffing with supporting managers
- Demonstrate strong, effective, and decisive project leadership and establish an execution framework to ensure the safety, quality, value, timeliness, and profitability of the total project execution (engineering, procurement and construction/construction management (EPC/EPCM), commissioning, start up, and operations as appropriate to the project scope)
- Participate in the accurate, comprehensive, and timely project reporting, including completion of the final close-out report, and in project reviews
- Collaborate with Project Controls in the establishment, maintenance, and management of a fully documented change control system that tracks all changes to the contract and project baseline requirements or conditions
- Support the establishment of an efficient and cost-effective project environment
- Participate in the management and control the project’s cost and schedule by ensuring that effective project controls are in place and functioning properly, including establishment of a project structure (work breakdown structure/network/network activity), a quantitative approach to planning, reporting, and control, and a change management system
- Keep supervisor and senior operations management fully informed on project status, including client relations, project cost and schedule, changes in risk assessment, anticipated changes in project financial performance, and any other major concerns
- Ensure that project records are identified, collected, indexed, filed, stored, and maintained (including supplier records) in accordance with the project file index and retention schedule
- Review, organize, and share relevant lessons learned from other projects and seek advice from other experienced managers as necessary throughout the life of the project
- Execute the work in accordance with the quality standards and requirements specified for the project, including the preparation of and compliance with project-specific activity plans and ensuring project audits/assessments are conducted per plan
- Ensure effective and timely coordination between design, procurement, material management, and construction teams for integration of technical content and schedule requirements
- Ensure timely preparation and issuance of project deliverables, design documents, and bid packages in correct quality and according to project schedule to support project execution activities
- Lead the implementation of an effective design coordination with licensors, vendors, and subcontractors to ensure proper and complete integration within the project plans
- Ensure effective interface management with third parties.
Job Requirements
Qualifications:
- Grade 12/N3 or NQF level 4
- A minimum of ten years as a Mine Overseer in a Trackless Mining Environment (TMM)
- Minimum of a Mine Overseer’s Certificate of Competency
- A Mine Manager’s Certificate of Competency would be advantageous
- Relevant Project Management qualification
Job specific experience:
- Ten (10) years of work-related experience, a recognised professional certification or registration in the applicable field
- Relevant experience managing Underground Projects from studies into execution and operations
- Manage and control various project team members as well as any subconsultants
- Extensive underground and surface mining study/execution experience
- UG Mining experience (Ventilation, Incline Shafts and relevant mining experience).
Inherent requirements
Must be medically fit.
