What Does a Government Handyman Do?
Government Handymen are essential to the safe operation and maintenance of departmental buildings and facilities. In this role, you will be responsible for attending to minor electrical, plumbing, and carpentry repairs, conducting building inspections, logging maintenance calls, monitoring contractors, and ensuring OHS compliance — keeping government facilities safe, functional, and well-maintained at all times.
This is a practical, hands-on role that requires basic maintenance knowledge across multiple trades, a strong safety mindset, and the ability to work independently and as part of a team in a busy government building environment.
Key Responsibilities of a Handyman
Building Maintenance & Repairs
- Attend to minor electrical, plumbing, and carpentry problems in and around the building.
- Repair broken equipment and ensure all maintenance issues are resolved timeously.
- Assist with installations that require wall mounting and related fitting work.
- Report all maintenance issues and completed repairs to the supervisor.
Building Inspections
- Conduct regular inspections in and around the building to identify maintenance requirements.
- Report all findings and identified faults to the supervisor promptly.
- Assist with developing and maintaining building maintenance schedules.
- Log all maintenance calls for repairs accurately and timeously.
OHS Compliance & Safety
- Conduct monthly Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) inspections and submit reports to the supervisor.
- Assist with OHS compliance in the building by providing ongoing maintenance support.
- Apply knowledge of the National Building Regulations in all maintenance and repair work.
- Ensure all maintenance activities are carried out in accordance with OHS requirements.
Contractor Monitoring
- Monitor contractors on site to ensure compliance with departmental requirements and safety regulations.
- Report any contractor non-compliance or safety concerns to the supervisor immediately.
- Assist with overseeing maintenance-related contractor work as directed.
Tools, Equipment & Stock Management
- Ensure the safekeeping of all maintenance tools and equipment.
- Conduct monthly stock taking of maintenance supplies and submit accurate reports.
- Maintain tools and equipment in good working order and report any defects or losses.
General Maintenance Support
- Provide general maintenance support to the department as directed by the supervisor.
- Take initiative in identifying and addressing minor maintenance issues before they escalate.
- Work collaboratively with the facilities management team to ensure the building is well-maintained at all times.
Minimum Requirements – Handyman
To be considered for this Handyman position, applicants must meet the following requirements:
Educational Qualifications:
- ABET Level 4 or equivalent qualification
Knowledge Requirements:
- Basic maintenance knowledge across plumbing, carpentry, and electrical
- Knowledge of Occupational Health and Safety (OHS)
- Knowledge of the National Building Regulations
Skills & Competencies:
- Good verbal and written communication skills
- Ability to work under pressure and meet maintenance deadlines
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Ability to take initiative and work independently when required
