Electrical Engineering Support Role – Secunda Operations
Sasol is recruiting two Electrical Engineer I professionals to join the Secunda Operations Electrical Engineering team in Secunda, Mpumalanga. This opportunity is ideal for qualified Electrical Engineers with at least three years of relevant experience who are looking to grow their careers within a global integrated chemicals and energy company.
The Secunda Operations Electrical Engineering team provides technical support to various electrical maintenance departments responsible for maintaining electrical equipment across the Sasol Secunda petrochemical plant. The team plays a critical role in ensuring equipment reliability, asset integrity, compliance with engineering standards, and safe plant operations.
Purpose of the Role
The Electrical Engineer I will provide both day-to-day technical engineering support and long-term asset management support for electrical equipment throughout the factory.
The role includes fault-finding during breakdown scenarios, providing inputs into Root Cause Analyses (RCAs) related to equipment failures, and offering engineering guidance for electrical changes made on plant equipment.
The engineer will ensure compliance with electrical engineering specifications and standards, manage deviations when required, and provide commissioning support after maintenance activities or equipment replacement and renewal.
The Utilities Electrical Engineering team supports the Powerstation and Water & Ash business units. A total of seven electrical engineers form part of this Utilities plant support team, reporting to the Electrical Engineering Team Lead for Utilities.
Electrical Equipment Supported
The position involves supporting a wide range of electrical equipment, including:
HV, MV, and LV switchgear, transformers, and cables
MV and LV Variable Speed Drives (VSDs) and motors
Motor control centres
Synchronous generators and gas turbines
Protection systems and relays
Industrial UPS systems
Battery backup systems for protection and control systems
Earthing and lightning protection systems
Key Responsibilities
The Electrical Engineer will analyse electrical equipment failure modes and trends to manage reliability and predictability.
The role includes identifying and mitigating equipment risks through engineering improvements, redesign, or asset renewal strategies.
Ensuring compliance with electrical standards and specifications for plant projects and equipment modifications is a key requirement. The engineer must manage deviations and ensure technical governance is maintained.
Technical and commissioning support must be provided to plant electrical maintenance teams, especially on complex electrical systems.
The engineer will also provide support to project teams during execution of electrical projects and ensure adherence to cost, schedule, and quality targets for small single-discipline electrical projects.
Project documentation and electrical designs must be reviewed to ensure compliance, fitness for purpose, cost-effectiveness, and integration with existing plant systems.
The role includes identifying critical electrical equipment with significant production impact and becoming a subject matter expert in those areas.
Asset renewal plans and roadmaps must be compiled based on equipment condition and business risk.
The Electrical Engineer will assist or lead incident investigations when production losses occur and contribute to setting maintenance strategy criteria based on OEM requirements and engineering standards.
Additional responsibilities include technical bid evaluations, contractor assessments, risk assessments for electrical work, and maintaining professional relationships with engineering consultants and service providers.
Knowledge sharing with engineers-in-training is also expected.
Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor of Engineering (B Eng) degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognised University
or
Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in Electrical Engineering from a recognised University
Experience Requirements
Minimum of 3 or more years of relevant electrical engineering experience.
