Department of Justice and Constitutional Development

The Department of Justice and Constitutional Development invites applications from suitably qualified candidates for the position of Court Interpreter. These posts are available at various Magistrate Offices across the Eastern Cape and Mpumalanga provinces. Successful candidates will be required to sign a performance agreement.


Salary

R228 321 – R268 950 per annum

Minimum Requirements

Applicants must meet the following requirements:

  • NQF Level 4 / Grade 12

  • Proficiency in English and one or more indigenous languages

  • Language requirements:

    • Eastern Cape: Preference will be given to languages used in the area, including isiXhosa, Afrikaans, Sesotho, as well as Sign Language

    • Ermelo (Mpumalanga): isiXhosa and isiZulu

  • A valid driver’s license will be an added advantage


Skills and Competencies

  • Good written and verbal communication skills

  • Ability to maintain strong interpersonal relations

  • High levels of accuracy and attention to detail


Key Duties and Responsibilities

The successful candidate will be responsible for the following key performance areas:

  • Interpretation in Criminal Court, Civil Court, Labour Court, and quasi-judicial proceedings

  • Interpretation during consultations

  • Translation of legal documents and exhibits

  • Recording of cases in the criminal record book

  • Drawing of case records on request of Magistrates and Prosecutors

  • Keeping accurate statistical records
