ROLE OVERVIEW

The Handyman will be responsible for carrying out multiple first-line repairs and maintenance tasks daily. These may include carpentry, electrical, plumbing, painting, HVAC, flooring, and other general facility repairs. This role requires a hands-on, solutions-oriented professional capable of troubleshooting, diagnosing faults, and performing quality repairs in line with scheduled maintenance plans and safety regulations.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

General, Equipment, Infrastructure, and System Maintenance

  • Check in with the services office for scheduled jobs after completing each task and at the end of the workday.
  • Manage daily job schedules effectively to maximise productivity.
  • Prepare necessary tools and personal protective equipment (PPE) for the day’s work.
  • Respond to requests for equipment and system installations, repairs, and upgrades as per scheduled maintenance plans.
  • Diagnose system or equipment faults and troubleshoot to complete light and routine repairs.
  • Inspect supplies, machinery, and systems, identifying and addressing potential risk areas.
  • Assist tradespeople with specialised electrical, plumbing, or HVAC repairs.
  • Perform minor electrical repairs such as replacing light bulbs, fixing wiring, and repairing circuit breakers or fuses.
  • Undertake general carpentry tasks including woodwork, sanding, painting, and building cabinets.
  • Conduct plumbing activities such as fixing leaks, repairing toilets and faucets.
  • Complete facility repairs, including fixing doors, locks, broken tiles, polishing floors, pressure washing, and window repairs.
  • Conduct preventive maintenance checks on systems and escalate the need for major repairs.
  • Adjust system settings and perform performance tests using specialised tools.
  • Provide feedback to management on the status of repairs and installations.
  • Securely store parts and tools in accordance with standard operating procedures and safety regulations.

Maintenance Compliance

  • Inspect and test systems to ensure compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations.
  • Properly store maintenance assets, technical stock, and spare parts.
  • Maintain PPE to required safety standards.
  • Keep up to date with safety, health, and environmental (SHE) regulations and update skills as necessary.
  • Stay informed on HVAC installation, maintenance, and repair regulations and adjust practices accordingly.
  • Ensure adherence to company policies and updated procedures for maintaining and repairing equipment.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE

Education

  • Grade 12 (Matric) or equivalent.

Experience

  • Minimum of 1 year of experience in general maintenance and repairs.

Work Conditions and Special Requirements

  • Ability to work shifts to meet operational requirements.
  • Physical strength to lift and operate machinery and equipment.
  • Good mobility to move efficiently throughout work areas.
  • Manual dexterity, balance, and overall coordination to perform physical tasks.
  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, stoop, twist, climb, and perform repetitive movements for an entire shift.
