Job Overview
RCL Foods is on the lookout for two highly skilled Utilities Artisans to join the Pies Division team at the Krugersdorp plant. This is a critical engineering role focusing on maintenance, inspections, installations, and repairs of utility systems—including refrigeration (ammonia and freon), boilers, compressors, and electrical systems.
This opportunity is perfect for trade-tested artisans who want to grow in a dynamic FMCG environment while ensuring that utilities equipment performs optimally and safely.
Minimum Requirements
Education & Certifications
- N3 in Mechanical/Electrical Engineering or Refrigeration
- Trade Tested Artisan
- Registered with SAQCC Gas
Core Duties & Responsibilities
1. Plant Inspections
- Conduct daily visual and operational inspections on plant rooms, valve stations, chillers, spiral freezers, condensers, air compressors, and boilers
- Ensure optimal operational functionality and proactively detect issues
2. Preventative Maintenance
- Carry out scheduled maintenance as per work orders and planned time allocations
- Prevent potential system failures through proactive maintenance practices
3. Troubleshooting & Repairs
- Diagnose faults on refrigeration and utility systems
- Perform efficient repairs to avoid downtime and ensure reliability
- Use root cause analysis techniques for recurring faults
4. Safety Compliance
- Comply with all safety procedures and PPE protocols
- Work in accordance with SANS 10147, OHS Act, and all other statutory regulations
- Understand handling of ammonia systems, pressure vessels, and critical valves
5. Documentation & Administration
- Maintain accurate logs of inspections, maintenance, and repairs
- Develop and implement standard work instructions, quick-fix routines, and reporting processes
6. Equipment Operation
- Operate lifting machinery and tools safely and responsibly during maintenance tasks
7. Training & Teamwork
- Assist senior technicians
- Mentor apprentices or junior staff in maintenance procedures
- Collaborate effectively with production and technical teams
8. Emergency Response
- Participate in safety and emergency training (buddy-buddy system)
- Be part of the emergency response team for incidents involving ammonia and other hazards
Skills & Competencies Required
- Extensive knowledge of ammonia and freon refrigeration systems
- Proficiency in both mechanical and electrical systems
- Excellent problem-solving and fault diagnosis skills
- Strong attention to safety and compliance
- Ability to work in high-risk, regulated environments
- Capable of accurate record-keeping and documentation
- Team-oriented with good communication and training abilities
