As a contractor for Phakisa Holdings, you’ll join a high-performance team delivering essential maintenance and support in hazardous and regulated operational zones.
Role Overview
Phakisa Holdings is urgently seeking a qualified Auto Electrician to take on a crucial role in the petrochemical sector in Secunda. The successful candidate will be responsible for electrical diagnostics, installations, repairs, and preventative maintenance on mobile plant vehicles and machinery operating in a high-risk industrial setting.
This is a full-time, site-based position and offers an hourly rate of R170.34 under a Market Incentive Pay (MIP) structure. If you’re a Red Seal-certified auto electrician with strong diagnostic and safety skills, and experience in industrial or petrochemical environments, this opportunity is ideal for you.
Key Responsibilities

Diagnose, troubleshoot, and repair electrical faults on mobile equipment such as tankers, forklifts, trucks, and cranes

Perform electrical installations, wiring, and system upgrades in line with petrochemical safety requirements

Maintain and calibrate onboard telemetry and monitoring systems (e.g., GPS, CAN bus, PLCs)

Conduct thorough inspections and scheduled preventative maintenance

Ensure accurate documentation of service work, parts usage, and inspection records

Interpret and apply information from wiring diagrams, OEM technical manuals, and schematics

Collaborate with mechanical fitters and site engineers to ensure complete maintenance coverage

Install and certify intrinsically safe (IS) electrical systems for hazardous zones

Comply with all plant-specific permit-to-work systems, ATEX/IECEx safety regulations, and confined space protocols

Respond quickly to reports of faults, unsafe conditions, or potential breakdown risks
Qualifications and Experience

Trade-certified Auto Electrician (Red Seal qualification required)

Minimum of 3–5 years of experience in automotive or mobile plant electrical systems

Experience in hazardous or petrochemical environments is a strong advantage

Familiarity with Ex-rated equipment and intrinsically safe systems is beneficial

Understanding of permit-to-work systems and plant safety compliance

Valid South African driver’s license (heavy vehicle license is an advantage)

Basic mechanical knowledge and familiarity with plant operations

Advanced electrical fault-finding and diagnostic expertise

Ability to work independently and efficiently under time and safety pressures

Strong communication and teamwork skills for cross-disciplinary collaboration

Awareness of environmental, health, and safety (EHS) requirements

Capable of working in extreme conditions: confined spaces, heights, noisy/dusty areas, and high-temperature environments

Comfortable using PPE and adhering to stringent safety protocols

Willingness to perform standby duties, shift work, or overtime when necessary
Health, Safety and Environmental (HSE) Responsibilities

Comply with all site safety rules, PPE regulations, and operational procedures

Actively participate in toolbox talks, risk assessments, and daily safety briefings

Immediately report all hazards, unsafe behaviour, near misses, or incidents

Maintain safety and functionality of electrical tools and diagnostic equipment

Support continuous improvement and a zero-harm safety culture
