Role Overview

Premier FMCG is seeking a highly skilled and detail-oriented Supervisor Lab to join the Quality Control team at their East London Mill. The successful candidate will be responsible for supervising and coordinating daily laboratory operations, ensuring strict compliance with ISO/IEC 17025 standards, food safety protocols, and quality control procedures. This role requires technical expertise, leadership capabilities, and a strong understanding of laboratory best practices within the FMCG and milling industry.

Key Responsibilities

Supervise laboratory personnel and trainees, ensuring optimal work distribution
Schedule and balance daily laboratory activities to meet operational requirements
Conduct training on laboratory methods, procedures, and ISO/IEC 17025 compliance
Perform competency assessments to maintain laboratory standards
Ensure all testing complies with ISO/IEC 17025, SANAS guidelines, and internal standard operating procedures
Coordinate internal audits, management reviews, and cross-functional audits
Approve laboratory test results, certificates of analysis (COAs), and product releases
Maintain and control laboratory documentation including SOPs, work instructions, and forms
Monitor laboratory performance through control charts, proficiency testing, and non-conformance logs
Drive corrective and preventive actions (CAPA) to address testing errors and deviations
Ensure laboratory safety protocols are adhered to and promote a safe working environment
Report laboratory results and any non-conformances to relevant departments promptly
Plan and oversee the maintenance and servicing of laboratory equipment to ensure testing accuracy
Represent the laboratory during customer or auditor site visits
Compile timely and accurate reports to support operational decision-making
Support the Food Safety Team Leader as a Deputy, ensuring continuity of the Food Safety Management System
Assist the Manager with departmental leadership, acting as second-in-charge when required
Facilitate compliance with FSSC 22000 by providing training, validation, and verification of control measures

Qualification Requirements

Matric (Grade 12)
Qualified Food Technologist, or a Degree in Food Science or Analytical Chemistry
ISO/IEC 17025 Implementation Training

Experience Requirements

Minimum of 3 to 5 years’ laboratory experience within the FMCG sector
At least 2 years’ supervisory experience in a laboratory environment
2 years’ experience within the milling industry preferred
Proficiency in computer literacy essential

Key Competencies

In-depth knowledge of ISO/IEC 17025 laboratory management
Understanding of FSSC 22000 food safety standards
Strong leadership and people management abilities
Attention to detail with high levels of accuracy
Proven ability to conduct internal audits and manage non-conformances
Excellent communication and reporting skills
Analytical and problem-solving capabilities
Ability to work under pressure and meet strict deadlines
