Role Overview
BKB Ltd is looking for a qualified and experienced Senior Biosecurity Practitioner to oversee and implement biosecurity measures across the Northern Region’s auction facilities. The role is pivotal to ensuring compliance with the Biosecurity Rules for Livestock Agents as mandated in Government Gazette No. 43900 (Board Notice 135 of 2020). Based in Frankfort, Free State, this role requires a candidate who combines veterinary science expertise with strong leadership and regulatory compliance skills. This is a key opportunity for a veterinary professional looking to make a meaningful impact in South Africa’s livestock industry.
Key Responsibilities
Risk Assessment and Analysis

Conduct thorough biosecurity risk assessments at all auction venues in the Northern Region

Develop and implement mitigation strategies to prevent the spread of infectious diseases
Implementation of Biosecurity Protocols
-
Design, implement, and monitor all biosecurity policies
-
Manage the use and maintenance of disinfection stations, quarantine areas, PPE usage, and proper waste disposal
-
Ensure that all biosecurity documentation remains up to date and aligned with current legislation
Monitoring and Surveillance
-
Perform routine inspections and surveillance for disease outbreaks or contamination
-
Report any irregularities or non-compliance to relevant authorities promptly
Training and Awareness
-
Deliver ongoing training to staff and stakeholders on biosecurity practices
-
Provide mentorship and training to Trainee Biosecurity Practitioners
-
Promote a culture of accountability and health safety
Compliance and Regulation

Ensure complete adherence to all relevant laws, including:

Animal Diseases Act 35 of 1984

Animal Identification Act 6 of 2002

Stock Theft Act 57 of 1959

Animal Protection Act 72 of 1962

Agricultural Produce Agents Act 12 of 1992

Assist with internal and external audits and inspections
Incident Response and Recovery

Draft and lead contingency response plans for outbreaks

Support decontamination and eradication operations when necessary

Collaborate with emergency response teams across the region
Record Keeping and Reporting

Maintain precise records of all biosecurity activities and incidents
-
Compile reports for audits, compliance checks, and internal review

Use data-driven insights to improve biosecurity strategies
Stakeholder Engagement

Coordinate biosecurity practices across multiple branches and regions

Foster cooperative relationships with internal stakeholders and external bodies

Liaise closely with APAC regarding industry standards and enforcement
Continuous Improvement and Research

Stay updated on emerging biosecurity threats, technologies, and global best practices

Recommend ongoing improvements to existing policies and procedures
Qualifications and Experience
-
Bachelor of Veterinary Science (BVSc) is essential

Must be registered with the South African Veterinary Council (SAVC)

Strong knowledge of the livestock industry and its regulatory environment

In-depth understanding of animal health laws and compliance standards
