Role Overview

Fraser Alexander is currently recruiting an experienced and skilled Engineering Foreman for its operations in Mpumalanga. This permanent position plays a critical role in ensuring that all plant and machinery within the Processing Plant are maintained to the highest operational standards. The ideal candidate will be a technically adept leader with a strong maintenance background, who can balance hands-on problem-solving with the ability to lead and mentor a technical team.

This role is perfect for someone with a mechanical or electrical trade background, who has progressed into a supervisory or management role within a plant or mining environment.


Key Responsibilities

As the Engineering Foreman, your responsibilities will include:

Safety, Health, and Environment (SHE):

  • Fulfill legal responsibilities in accordance with MHSA Section 2.9.2.

  • Adhere to and promote FAMP safety policies, procedures, and operational standards.

  • Champion proactive safety behaviour and ensure compliance with the company’s zero-harm framework.

Maintenance and Operational Support:

  • Execute scheduled and routine maintenance in collaboration with production schedules.

  • Drive preventive and predictive maintenance programs to reduce unplanned breakdowns.

  • Maintain high equipment reliability and operational efficiency.

  • Evaluate and monitor condition of processing plant machinery and equipment.

Coordination and Cost Control:

  • Issue job cards and work schedules to maintenance teams.

  • Monitor third-party contractor performance and ensure compliance with operational standards.

  • Effectively manage parts inventory and control maintenance costs.

  • Track Mean Time To Repair (MTTR) and Mean Time Between Failures (MTBF) for operational insight.

Administrative Duties:

  • Ensure accurate documentation of maintenance logs and inspection reports.

  • Submit monthly performance and cost reports to engineers and site management.

  • Maintain breakdown records and develop performance reports for ongoing improvement.

Team Leadership and Development:

  • Supervise, train, and develop a team of maintenance personnel.

  • Appoint competent individuals and conduct daily team meetings for alignment and feedback.

  • Enforce discipline, encourage accountability, and mentor students undergoing work-integrated learning.


Minimum Qualifications

  • N3 Certificate in Mechanical or Electrical Engineering subjects.

  • Trade Test (MQA/MERSETA preferred).

  • Supervisory Training Course (advantageous).


Experience Requirements

  • 2 years as a Learnership/Apprentice in mining, transport, construction, plant or manufacturing.

  • 3 to 5 years experience as a qualified Artisan in plant or mining environments.

  • 3 years management or supervisory experience, particularly in processing plant operations.


Skills and Competencies

  • Strong technical expertise in both electrical and mechanical engineering.

  • Excellent troubleshooting and root cause failure analysis (RCFA) skills.

  • Effective prioritization and execution of tasks under pressure.

  • Firm but fair supervisory and mentoring abilities.

  • Excellent verbal and written communication.

  • Basic proficiency in Excel and familiarity with Pragma Onkey (or similar CMMS).

  • Strong knowledge of maintenance best practices, standards, and regulatory compliance.
