Role Overview

The General Assistant plays a vital role in maintaining operational efficiency in the store by ensuring high levels of customer service, effective stock merchandising, and a clean and safe working environment. Key Responsibilities

Customer Service

  • Provide friendly and helpful service to all customers.

  • Assist with product inquiries and offer advice to ensure customer satisfaction.

  • Address and resolve customer complaints or escalate them to the Store Manager when necessary.

Merchandising Standards

  • Ensure all merchandise in your designated area is properly displayed according to the store’s layout and planograms.

  • Maintain accurate and visible shelf pricing labels.

  • Replenish shelves and displays promptly with newly received stock.

Housekeeping

  • Maintain cleanliness and order in your assigned area to prevent hazards and ensure a positive shopping experience.

  • Ensure aisles are clear of obstacles and safe for customer navigation.

  • Assist with hygiene checks for store facilities including canteen and toilets.

Health & Safety (OHSA Compliance)

  • Follow all health and safety regulations, including the proper use of safety gear.

  • Monitor the safety of stock placement in bulk areas to prevent injuries or accidents.

  • Promptly report any safety hazards or damaged infrastructure to the Store Manager.

Stock Loss Management

  • Identify and report damaged or faulty stock items in your area.

  • Ensure that stock is securely and neatly merchandised to prevent shrinkage or theft.

Operational Excellence

  • Consistently meet performance targets and adhere to the company’s quality standards.

  • Complete assigned tasks on time with attention to detail.

  • Follow operational checklists and daily duties accurately.

Problem-Solving and Decision-Making

  • Identify issues in your work area and resolve them promptly or escalate as necessary.

  • Make decisions based on company policies and procedures while considering the safety and satisfaction of customers and colleagues.

Planning and Time Management

  • Manage your time effectively to complete multiple tasks during your shift.

  • Prioritize duties during peak hours to maintain productivity and service quality.

Teamwork and Communication

  • Work collaboratively with team members to ensure the smooth operation of the store.

  • Maintain professional communication with customers, colleagues, and management.

  • Share important information or updates with the appropriate team members.


Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 10 or NQF Level 3 with 1 year of related work experience OR

  • Grade 12 (Matric) with no prior experience.

  • Ability to communicate in English and the dominant local language.

  • Valid South African ID or work permit.

  • Basic numerical skills to perform routine calculations.

  • Willingness to work shifts, weekends, and public holidays.

  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and in a fast-paced retail environment.
