Role Overview
The Training Facilitator role is a crucial position focused on the delivery of internal and accredited driver training programs to both new and experienced drivers and machine operators. As a Training Facilitator, you will be responsible for conducting practical skills assessments, delivering safety and compliance training, and coaching drivers to improve operational efficiency and professionalism. This role requires a combination of practical driver training knowledge, strong facilitation skills, and deep understanding of transport safety protocols.
You’ll be instrumental in upskilling Unitrans’ workforce and supporting the company’s objective of maintaining top-tier driver safety, performance, and compliance in line with industry regulations.
Key Responsibilities

Facilitate comprehensive driver training, including both classroom-based and practical sessions aligned to Unit Standards and company protocols.

Conduct detailed driver and operator skills assessments before employment and provide feedback and recommendations to contract management.

Identify training needs from incidents, accidents, or performance reviews and design retraining sessions accordingly.

Facilitate practical, on-road evaluations to ensure driver competency in real-world scenarios.

Conduct in-cab driver assessments on a scheduled basis to monitor performance and adherence to safety standards.

Provide unit standard training on a wide range of machinery and vehicles including heavy rigid vehicles, vehicle combinations, front-end loaders, backhoe loaders, articulated dump trucks, skid steer loaders, tele loggers, and excavators.

Adjust Journey Management Plans after site visits or driver assessments using tools like Google Maps and telematics data.

Maintain and manage detailed training records, performance evaluations, and intervention reports.

Assist in incident investigations when requested by SHERQ teams, using driver behavior data, fuel consumption reports, and onboard telematics.

Collaborate with the senior training facilitator and contract managers to compile training strategies that address driver behavior, safety, and fuel efficiency.

Lead safety briefings, toolbox talks, and refresher training sessions to ensure all drivers and operators remain updated with best practices.

Train drivers on various trailer and vehicle types, and coach them on efficient and safe loading/unloading techniques.

Support and act as a backup facilitator during crisis or emergency scenarios requiring rapid driver or operator intervention.
Qualifications and Experience

A Bachelor’s Degree or Advanced Diploma in a related field.

Minimum of 5 years of relevant experience in driver training and facilitation.

Registered Assessor with knowledge of SAQA-aligned Unit Standards.

Valid Code EC driver’s license with PrDP (essential).

Valid Earth Moving Equipment (EME) certificates.

Hands-on experience with a variety of machinery listed under the required unit standards.

Prior experience in the Mining Industry is advantageous.

MQA registration (preferred).
