Position Objective

The Storage & Backup Engineer is responsible for maintaining SANRAL’s storage, SAN, and computer hardware by adhering to OEM best practices. This role involves designing, implementing, and deploying shared system resources such as disks and networking, ensuring performance analysis, troubleshooting, data recovery strategies, and backup measures for critical systems.

Minimum Requirements

  • Education: A Diploma in Information Technology (NQF Level 6).
  • Experience: Five (5) years relevant storage and backup experience in an Enterprise ICT environment.
  • Certification:
    • HPE 3PAR StoreServ I and/or HPE 3PAR HPE StoreServ II.

Advantageous

  • Experience with IT enterprise size Disaster Recovery (DR) plans and implementations.
  • Managing HPE 3PAR StoreServ I & II experience.
  • Implementing MSA Storage Solutions experience.
  • ITIL Foundation certification.

Technical Competencies

  • Knowledge of the Software Development Lifecycle (SDLC) and Agile methodologies, processes, tools, and best practices.
  • Ability to prioritize calls for implementation, managing expectations.
  • Technology:
    • Systems and Systems Integration
    • Vendor Management
    • Managing 15 Petabytes
    • Technical lead for Plan, Build, and Operate
    • HPE 3PAR (7000 series, 20800 series, or latest)
    • HPE MSA
    • HPE Blade Chassis (9000 series, 7000 series or latest)
    • HPE Physical Servers (Various models)
    • SAN (Physical and Fabrics, Director Class, Blade Chassis switches).

Key Responsibilities

Management of Systems in accordance with ITIL Methodologies

  • Respond to calls and requests logged on Helpdesk and resolve them promptly.
  • SLA Management for Data Center Services.
  • Follow the Change Management, Incident Management, and Problem Management frameworks according to ITIL.
  • Contribute to continuous improvements in service delivery.

Operational Tasks

  • Monitor, contribute, and report on compliance to documented protocols to meet contractual objectives.
  • Maintain short-term and long-term capacity and availability goals to ensure service delivery.
  • Participate in the development of policies, procedures, and organizational capability to manage continuity and disaster recovery.
  • Participate in any incident leading to a disastrous event and conduct annual disaster recovery testing.
  • Participate in SANRAL’s ICT DR plans, policies, and strategies.
  • Storage provisioning and zoning.
  • Firmware maintenance (SAN, Storage, Blade Chassis, Physical servers).
  • Maintain HPE repairs and manage patching activities.
  • Ad-hoc project management.

Reporting

  • Provide monthly SANRAL infrastructure availability reports.
  • Contribute to the compilation of capacity and availability reports.
  • Report on ICT hardware firmware status, ICT software status, and project feedback.
  • Provide feedback on changes and ticket statuses.
