Role Overview
The Receiving Clerk will be responsible for verifying and processing all incoming goods, ensuring that stock is received in a condition that meets company standards. You will work closely with suppliers, store management, and other departments to ensure that the stock flow is smooth, any discrepancies are reported promptly, and that storerooms are well-organized and managed. This role involves physical labor, including lifting heavy boxes, and requires close attention to detail to maintain inventory accuracy.
Key Responsibilities
- Receiving and Verification:
- Accurately verify, scan, and capture all incoming stock for the store, following Dis-Chem’s policy and SOPs.
- Ensure that goods delivered match the quantities, variants, and conditions specified on invoices.
- Handle high-risk stock with care, ensuring all safety and security measures are observed.
- Stock Management and Storage:
- Oversee the proper flow of stock receipts through the receiving process and onto the store floor.
- Ensure that deliveries are receipted on the same day they arrive and maintain storerooms in an orderly and acceptable condition.
- Assist in managing stock rotation to ensure all goods are organized and accessible.
- Quality Assurance and Return Processing:
- Check for damaged or unordered goods upon delivery, completing credit notes and processing returns as needed.
- Report any discrepancies or issues with deliveries to the Receiving Manager, assisting in the preparation and logging of warehouse claims when necessary.
- Ensure physical controls over the receiving area are in place and functional to prevent losses and inaccuracies.
- Collaboration and Communication:
- Work effectively with suppliers, management, and other store staff to ensure seamless stock flow and resolve any stock-related issues.
- Communicate any product discrepancies, inventory concerns, or stock handling challenges to the relevant department heads promptly.
- Compliance and Documentation:
- Follow all company guidelines, SOPs, and legal requirements related to stock receiving and inventory management.
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of stock received, returned, and processed in accordance with company standards.
Qualifications and Skills
- Education:
- Matric / Grade 12 qualification is required.
- Experience:
- Previous experience in a receiving, retail, or FMCG environment is advantageous but not essential.
- Skills:
- Computer literacy and familiarity with inventory systems.
- Sound numerical skills for accurate stock verification.
- Excellent English communication skills; bilingualism is a plus.
- Physical ability to lift and move heavy stock items, with the capability to handle weights of over 20kg.

- Knowledge of Receiving Procedures:
- Strong understanding of stock receiving and operating procedures, including knowledge of stock rotation systems and the ability to handle administrative tasks.
- Analytical and Problem-Solving Skills:
- Capable of identifying and resolving discrepancies with incoming stock, using analytical skills to ensure accuracy.
- Organizational Skills:
- Ability to maintain an organized, neat, and secure stock receiving area, with a keen eye for detail.
- Time Management:
- Effective in prioritizing tasks, managing time, and ensuring stock flow is smooth and timely.
Special Conditions of Employment
- Retail Hours: Willingness and ability to work flexible retail hours, including weekends and holidays, as needed.
- Physical Fitness: Physically capable of lifting heavy boxes (over 20kg).
- Proximity: Reliable transportation or residency near the Cape Road store is advantageous.
