Position Overview

As a Cashier, you will be responsible for processing customer purchases while adhering to Dis-Chem’s policies and protocols. Your role will be instrumental in creating a positive shopping experience for customers by providing quick, accurate, and friendly service. Your primary duties will include handling transactions, safeguarding cash flow, and assisting customers with queries.

Key Responsibilities

Customer Interaction and Service Delivery

  • Uphold Dis-Chem’s service standards, ensuring that each customer receives prompt and courteous service.
  • Build a professional rapport with customers, creating a friendly shopping environment and resolving any queries with empathy and attentiveness.
  • Address customer feedback, including compliments and complaints, by escalating relevant information to the Frontline Supervisor or store management.
  • Stay informed about current promotions and sales, offering customers up-to-date information to enhance their shopping experience.

Transaction Management and Cash Handling

  • Operate the point-of-sale system proficiently, ensuring that all transactions are processed accurately and in accordance with Dis-Chem’s standard operating procedures.
  • Ensure accurate cash handling, recording transactions meticulously, and managing cash flow responsibly.
  • Transact all purchases, processing payments through various methods such as cash, cards, vouchers, and loyalty points from accelerator partners like Discovery Health Care, Momentum Multiply, ABSA Rewards, and eBucks.
  • Place cash in the drop safe as per protocol and maintain confidentiality over cash handling practices, limiting access to yourself.
  • Authorize line voids, refunds, and price changes with supervisor approval to ensure consistency and prevent unauthorized adjustments.
  • Maintain a secure till area, ensuring that all money is safely stored and that outgoing merchandise is appropriately scanned and accounted for.

Inventory and Stock Management Support

  • Facilitate the exchange of merchandise, and manage returns as per store policy, ensuring that customer interactions are handled smoothly and fairly.
  • Assist customers with locating products, answering questions regarding merchandise, and providing general guidance as needed to ensure they find what they are looking for.

Security and Confidentiality

  • Remain vigilant for any unusual behavior and report suspicious activities to management, contributing to a safe environment for both customers and staff.
  • Safeguard your access credentials, ensuring that only you use your designated codes and passwords, which should be changed regularly for security.

Essential Qualifications and Skills

Minimum Requirements

To be eligible for this Cashier role at Dis-Chem, candidates should meet the following requirements:

  • Matric Certificate (Grade 12).
  • Minimum of six months’ experience in cashier or till operations, ideally within a retail setting.
  • Proficiency in MS Office and basic computer skills necessary for operating Dis-Chem’s point-of-sale system.
  • Strong numerical skills to handle cash transactions, make calculations accurately, and minimize discrepancies.
  • Excellent command of the English language for clear verbal and written communication with customers and colleagues.
  • Basic knowledge of customer service principles, demonstrating a welcoming and proactive approach toward assisting customers.
  • Flexibility to work retail hours, including weekends, holidays, and extended hours if required.
