Purpose of Role:
To provide installation, maintenance, repairs, and replacement of mechanical and electrical equipment and fixtures for the laboratory in compliance with the Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA) and relevant Codes of Practice (COPs) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to ensure safe, reliable, and optimal equipment performance.
Role Context:
Operational Delivery:
- Execute critical maintenance tasks by proactively inspecting equipment, including generators, transformers, and compressors in accordance with standards and procedures.
- Participate in lab shutdown activities to ensure timely completion per the scheduled plan and communicate effectively to minimize downtime.
- Assemble, install, and test electrical components and mechanical equipment using hand and power tools to ensure safe equipment utilization.
- Diagnose and correct system malfunctions to locate breakdown causes and implement corrective measures.
- Evaluate and analyze breakdown causes through root cause analysis, identifying areas for modifications or repairs.
- Participate in equipment layout planning and execute installation activities based on specifications.
- Implement a tracking system for equipment performance and regularly update maintenance procedures.
- Execute electrical maintenance tasks using standardized wiring procedures to ensure safety and implement a preventative maintenance schedule for electrical components.
Resource Management:
- Determine and manage resource needs within the area of responsibility to achieve outcomes.
- Maintain good housekeeping principles to keep the work area clean and safe, removing unused equipment or tools.
- Conduct final inspections before equipment handover following a standardized commissioning procedure and ensure proper documentation for seamless handover.
Stakeholder Relations:
- Communicate with internal and external stakeholders to achieve work objectives and maintain relationships.
- Advise management and end-users on equipment utilization, highlighting potential hazards and risks.
- Collaborate with operations and engineering teams to understand customer needs and implement predictive maintenance strategies.
- Engage with relevant departments on issues as directed by the Electrical Foreman.
Compliance, Risk, and Safety:
- Conduct pre-work risk assessments, isolating and testing to identify potential risks and implementing controls.
- Provide clear guidelines and expectations to assistants and contractors and conduct regular training on safety protocols.
- Conduct regular safety audits, promote personal protective equipment (PPE), and communicate safety concerns.
- Apply effective inspection techniques and conduct regular equipment audits to ensure compliance with industry standards.

- Grade 12 (NQF 4)
Certifications:
- Red sealed Millwright Trade certificate or SAQA Verified Millwright Trade Certificate
Job-Specific Experience:
- Minimum of 3 years of relevant experience
Inherent Requirements:
- Must be medically fit
