Purpose of the Role:

The External Communication Manager will lead Anglo American’s external and PR strategy, focusing on shaping the company’s narrative, reputation, and profile in South Africa. You will engage with a wide range of stakeholders, including senior leaders, media, and opinion-makers, to ensure the company’s position is effectively communicated and understood. This role requires a deep understanding of political, economic, and social trends impacting the mining industry and Anglo American’s operations in South Africa.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Strategic Communication: Develop and execute Anglo American’s PR strategy to enhance the company’s reputation in South Africa, including drafting press releases, speeches, and briefing papers for senior executives.
  • Stakeholder Engagement: Build and maintain relationships with key media and opinion leaders, ensuring accurate and timely communication of Anglo American’s business priorities and achievements.
  • Crisis Management: Proactively manage and resolve potential reputation issues before they escalate, including the development and execution of crisis communication plans.
  • Reputation Monitoring: Stay vigilant over external perceptions and public sentiment regarding Anglo American and its leadership, adjusting communication strategies as needed.
  • Advisory Role: Provide guidance to business communication teams across the South Africa region on tactical and strategic external communication issues, ensuring alignment with the company’s overall narrative and disclosure policies.
  • Team Leadership: Contribute to the growth and development of the corporate communication team, fostering a high-energy, professional environment committed to excellence.
  • Innovation and Technology: Drive the adoption of innovative communication practices, including the use of generative AI, to improve efficiency and impact.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree from a recognized institution. A degree in Communication, Media, Social Science, or Political Science is preferable.
  • 6-8 years of experience in communication, with at least 2 years in a management role.
  • Experience managing a team is advantageous.

Additional Skills and Requirements:

  • Strong understanding of the mining industry and the socio-political landscape in South Africa.
  • Exceptional writing and communication skills, with the ability to translate complex concepts into clear, impactful messages.
  • High level of emotional intelligence (EQ) and professionalism when interacting with stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in managing crisis communication and media relations.
