Position Overview

The Handyman will be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of building interiors and exteriors, ensuring operational functionality, safety, and aesthetic standards are maintained. This role will work closely with the Facilities Manager to support day-to-day building operations, perform technical repairs, and contribute to a well-maintained and professional environment.

The ideal candidate is hands-on, detail-oriented, and proactive, with the technical skills to address a wide range of maintenance tasks efficiently.


Minimum Requirements

Education and Training

  • Matric / Grade 12 (essential)

  • Wireman’s License (essential)

Work Experience

  • 2–5 years of relevant experience in building maintenance and technical support

  • Proficiency in painting, plumbing, carpentry, flooring, and waterproofing

  • Experience in carpet laying and welding

Core Skills

  • Hands-on technical ability and mechanical aptitude

  • Knowledge of electrical, plumbing, carpentry, tiling, and roofing repairs

  • Understanding of general safety standards and electrical equipment use

  • Strong initiative, problem-solving, and decision-making skills

  • Commitment to high-quality workmanship and customer satisfaction

  • Excellent teamwork and communication abilities


Key Performance Areas

Painting

  • Prepare surfaces and protect surrounding areas prior to painting

  • Execute painting on walls, doors, ceilings, rails, parking lines, and numbers

  • Clean work areas, store tools safely, and obtain client sign-off

Carpentry

  • Perform minor repairs on doors, locks, shelves, cupboards, and gutters

  • Ensure carpentry work meets quality and client standards

Plumbing

  • Resolve blockages and repair fixtures, including sinks, toilets, and geysers

  • Prepare surfaces for tiles and conduct repairs according to specifications

Floor Repairs

  • Remove and replace damaged carpet tiles or floor coverings

  • Ensure high-quality finishes and maintain clean work areas

Equipment Installation

  • Assist in moving and installing projectors, TVs, wallboards, blinds, and dispensers

  • Coordinate with IT for equipment setup and minor adjustments

Roof Repairs

  • Conduct waterproofing and minor roof repairs, including pipe and drain maintenance

  • Complete tasks efficiently and ensure client satisfaction


Technical Knowledge and Competencies

  • Practical knowledge in painting, carpentry, plumbing, tiling, flooring, and waterproofing

  • Ability to work with electrical and mechanical equipment safely

  • Familiarity with workplace safety standards and procedures

  • Strong attention to detail and ability to complete work orders to client specifications

  • Effective problem-solving and decision-making skills in a fast-paced environment
