Role Overview
The General Worker position is a permanent, full-time opportunity designed for individuals with a passion for agriculture and research. The role focuses on supporting seed preparation, planting, greenhouse activities, and field operations.
This position is crucial to maintaining the high-quality standards of seed production and crop research that Starke Ayres is known for. By assisting in various stages of the planting and seedling process, the General Worker plays a key role in supporting breeders, researchers, and agricultural specialists.
Key Responsibilities
As a General Worker, you will be responsible for:

Seed Handling: Counting, packaging, soaking, washing, and drying seedling trays.

Soil Preparation: Mixing seedling soil and filling seedling trays and planting pots.

Planting Activities: Sowing seeds according to sowing lists, transplanting seedlings, and preparing planting holes in the field.

Greenhouse Duties: Moving seedling trays from germination rooms to seedling houses and arranging pots in greenhouses.

Irrigation Support: Connecting drippers to pots to ensure proper watering.

Trellising & Plant Support: Preparing ropes for trellising, attaching them to cables, and supporting plant growth.

Pollination & Breeding: Identifying flowers at the right stage, carrying out emasculation, and conducting pollination as per breeder’s crossing book.

Field Operations: Moving seedlings between facilities, organising planting layouts, and supporting ongoing research trials.
This role requires physical stamina, attention to detail, and the ability to follow precise instructions to ensure the success of crop development.
Entry Requirements
To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Education: National Senior Certificate (Grade 12) OR at least 2 years of experience in pollinations and emasculations.

Experience: Prior work in the agricultural industry will be considered an advantage.
