Role Overview
The company is seeking an experienced and dedicated Senior Safety Officer, Mining (C4 level) to join its SHEQ division in Springs. This is a key role responsible for ensuring full compliance with health, safety, and environmental legislation while implementing Gold One’s safety management systems underground. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in underground trackless mining environments, strong report-writing and analytical skills, and the ability to lead safety programmes that foster a culture of “safety first.”
Key Responsibilities

Conduct regular Health and Safety audits in the workplace and provide remedial action where required.

Identify, evaluate, and control hazardous conditions and practices across mining operations.

Participate in the design and implementation of hazard control programmes.

Monitor and assess the effectiveness of risk management and safety initiatives.

Analyse incidents and non-conformances to identify root causes, deficiencies, and opportunities for improvement.

Facilitate and lead investigations into workplace incidents.

Coordinate and actively participate in SHE meetings, ensuring stakeholder engagement.

Ensure effective communication and distribution of safety standards, policies, and procedures.

Oversee compliance with ISO 45001, Mine Health and Safety Act (MHSA), and other relevant regulations.

Promote Gold One’s safety culture, upholding the motto: “Nothing is so important that it cannot be done safely.”
Qualifications and Experience

Grade 12 or equivalent NQF Level 4 qualification.

Recognised Blasting Certificate (mandatory).
-
Shift Supervisor Certificate (advantageous).
-
Minimum 5 years’ prior experience as a Safety Officer in an underground trackless environment.

Strong knowledge of conventional and trackless mining (advantageous).

COMSOC I & II qualifications are essential.

Practical experience in SHE system implementation and auditing.

Proficiency in MS Office (particularly Excel).

Excellent report-writing and communication skills.

Knowledge of risk assessments, auditing systems, and investigation techniques.

Valid driver’s licence and willingness to travel as required.

South African citizenship and clear criminal record.

Medically fit as per mining occupational health requirements.
