Fraser Alexander, a leader in mining and tailings solutions, is looking to appoint a dedicated Environmental Officer at its Mpumalanga operation. This is an exciting opportunity for a qualified individual passionate about environmental compliance, sustainability, and regulatory reporting in a high-impact industry. The successful candidate will support the Environmental Superintendent and ensure strict adherence to both legal and internal environmental standards.
Key Responsibilities
Compliance and Risk Monitoring
- Track and manage compliance with permits, licences, and authorisations, ensuring full alignment with Fraser Alexander’s license to operate obligations.
- Log non-conformances and escalate to relevant line management using the internal event management system.
- Assist in preparing and submitting timely environmental monitoring and inspection reports.
- Collaborate with Environmental Specialists to ensure accurate reporting of all required environmental metrics for both company and regulatory purposes.
Policy and Procedure Support
- Assist in developing and implementing environmental policies, standards, and procedures.
- Participate in mine planning meetings and monitor alignment with Environmental Impact Assessments (EIA) and licence conditions.
- Run environmental awareness campaigns to promote responsible workplace behaviour.
Engagement with Authorities and Service Providers
- Support engagements with environmental regulatory authorities, ensuring effective communication and closure of compliance directives.
- Act as first-line support for external consultants and service providers, facilitating site access, logistics, and quality assurance.
Environmental Monitoring and Investigation
- Conduct audits and inspections related to air, water, land, biodiversity, and rehabilitation.
- Capture monitoring data in the computerised environmental management system.
- Lead and support incident investigations and follow-up actions.
- Assist with environmental budget planning, monitoring, and control at the operational level.
Minimum Requirements
Qualifications
- BSc / BTech / Honours in Environmental or Natural Sciences (MSc preferred)
- Proficient in Microsoft Office
- Valid driver’s license
- Able to obtain a Certificate of Fitness
Experience
- Minimum 3–5 years of relevant experience or internship in environmental management
- Understanding of OHS Act, Mine Health and Safety Act, and ISO 14001
- Exposure to project management and environmental law
- Solid knowledge of environmental reporting requirements, particularly in the coal mining sector
- Strong grasp of environmental management systems and impact assessments
