About the ARC-OVR
The ARC-OVR is a leading research institute specializing in animal health and veterinary sciences. As part of the Agricultural Research Council, it plays a central role in diagnosing, monitoring, and controlling livestock diseases, supporting food safety, and contributing to national and international veterinary standards.
Position Overview
The successful candidate will be responsible for performing bacteriological diagnostics on veterinary samples, adhering strictly to ISO/IEC 17025 standards. The position supports both routine diagnostic services and research development.
Core Responsibilities
- Perform culture, isolation, and identification of bacterial pathogens from animal feed, environmental, and biological samples
- Conduct bio-typing and serotyping of zoonotic bacteria
- Manage sample receipt, documentation, and storage
- Accurately record results in LabWare and laboratory result books
- Maintain laboratory reagents, consumables, and stock levels
- Uphold the Quality Management System (QMS) based on ISO 17025 standards
- Assist with development of new testing methods in collaboration with senior researchers
- Provide technical input for research projects and assist with experiment execution
- Ensure all activities meet health, safety, and biosecurity standards
Minimum Job Requirements
- National Diploma in Veterinary Technology (required)
- B-Tech in Veterinary Technology (advantageous)
- At least 3 years’ experience in a Bacteriology laboratory
- SAVC registration is mandatory
- Strong knowledge of veterinary bacterial pathogens and infectious diseases
- Excellent attention to detail and ability to follow quality protocols
- Good interpersonal and communication skills
- A valid driver’s licence will be an added advantage
