The Agricultural Research Council – Tropical and Subtropical Crops (ARC-TSC) invites applications for five (5) contract positions for Research Support Assistant: Plant Improvement, based in Hluhluwe, KwaZulu-Natal. This role is part of a key project funded by the Department of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, aimed at advancing crop research and agricultural innovation in South Africa.

Role Overview

The Research Support Assistants will provide hands-on support for agricultural field and glasshouse experiments, playing a vital part in plant improvement research. Working closely with research supervisors, the assistants will be responsible for land preparation, crop management, pest control, data recording, and equipment handling.

Key Responsibilities

  • Assist with land preparation, seed counting, and setup of planting markers
  • Participate in planting, weeding, watering, fertilization, and harvesting activities
  • Monitor and report on pest outbreaks (including mealybugs, fruit flies, thrips, etc.) and apply pesticides as instructed
  • Assist with processing plant samples for disease and pest analysis
  • Capture research data manually and accurately
  • Support maintenance of glasshouses and field equipment
  • Use agricultural research tools and equipment correctly and safely
  • Help in the organization of scientific events and demonstrations
  • Provide written and verbal feedback to supervisors about daily work
  • Participate in training and learning opportunities for skill development
  • Adhere to all Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) regulations and procedures

Minimum Requirements

  • Matric / Grade 12 certificate
  • Knowledge of basic agricultural practices and fieldwork
  • Strong communication, reading, and writing skills
  • Understanding of health and safety procedures in a work environment
  • A valid South African driver’s license is an advantage
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a collaborative team
  • Willingness to work under harsh weather conditions

Location and Preference

This position is based in Hluhluwe, KwaZulu-Natal, and preference will be given to applicants residing in the Hluhluwe area. Candidates must be willing to work in both indoor and outdoor environments.
