Exciting Job Opportunity at the Agricultural Research Council (ARC-VIMP)

The Agricultural Research Council – Vegetable, Industrial and Medicinal Plants (ARC-VIMP) is offering four (4) contract positions for Research Support Assistant: Agronomy, based in Roodeplaat, Pretoria. These roles are part of a three-year fixed term contract designed to support critical agricultural research and field operations across South Africa.
This is a valuable opportunity to gain hands-on experience in vegetable crop production, work with leading researchers, and contribute to national agricultural sustainability efforts.
Job Purpose and Overview
The Research Support Assistant will play a crucial support role in executing open field production and farm maintenance activities, under the guidance of supervisors. The position is ideal for individuals with previous experience in farming environments who are ready to grow their careers in a structured, research-driven setting.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform daily activities related to field cultivation, land preparation, planting, weeding, harvesting, irrigation, and fertilization
- Follow work plans and provide verbal feedback to supervisors about progress and challenges
- Assist with greenhouse sanitation, seedling production, and preparation of growth media
- Ensure effective use and care of research materials, farm tools, and equipment
- Apply herbicides and pesticides safely and responsibly (if trained and certified)
- Operate farm machinery, including tractors (advantageous but not mandatory)
- Maintain high standards of safety, adhering to all Occupational Health and Safety (OHS) guidelines
- Offer general support in research activities, including crop trials and data collection
Minimum Job Requirements
- Grade 10 (NQF Level 2) with at least 2 years of experience in farm-related duties
- Proven knowledge in vegetable crop management, including soil preparation, irrigation systems, and fertilization practices
- Experience in greenhouse work, especially seedling production and maintenance
- Practical experience in handling farm equipment and basic machinery
- Additional advantage: Ability to drive a tractor or safely handle herbicides and pesticides
- Must be a team player with good communication and a strong sense of responsibility
- High attention to detail, particularly regarding safety and plant care
