Role Overview
As a Phlebotomist at Ampath, you are more than a technician—you are the first point of contact in the diagnostic journey. You will be responsible for collecting both blood and non-blood specimens, ensuring accuracy, efficiency, and compassion in every interaction. This role requires a patient-first mindset, a commitment to quality, and the ability to operate in a fast-paced healthcare environment.
You will also handle tasks such as patient data entry, sample labeling, and payment processing, contributing to a seamless patient experience while upholding strict confidentiality and safety standards.
Key Responsibilities

Perform phlebotomy procedures including venipuncture, capillary draws, and non-blood specimen collection

Verify patient identity and ensure correct sample labelling and documentation

Handle specimens following chain-of-custody procedures to ensure integrity

Use Ampath’s digital systems for capturing patient data and processing requests

Ensure proper storage, packaging, and transport of specimens to laboratory facilities

Maintain clean, organized workstations according to hygiene and biosafety protocols

Process payments, respond to basic patient inquiries, and ensure a welcoming experience

Uphold Ampath’s professional standards and promote a positive image of the organization
Qualifications and Experience Required
To succeed in this role, you must meet the following criteria:

A recognized qualification in Phlebotomy or Nursing

Current registration with the HPCSA or SANC (Health Professions Council of South Africa or South African Nursing Council)

Experience in clinical specimen collection is advantageous

Familiarity with electronic medical records and healthcare information systems

Proven ability to work with patients from diverse backgrounds with empathy and professionalism

Excellent interpersonal and communication skills in English

Basic computer literacy (data capturing, email correspondence, lab systems)

High attention to detail and the ability to work under pressure

Work Schedule and Expectations
