ROLE OVERVIEW

The Junior Buyer role supports the Category Buyer by managing supplier relationships, monitoring category performance, and ensuring sustainable sourcing practices for the Groceries category. You’ll work closely with suppliers, marketing teams, planners, and store operations to maintain product availability, improve margins, and meet customer demands.

This role is ideal for a detail-oriented, proactive professional with FMCG buying experience and a strong grasp of supply chain fundamentals.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Support the Category Buyer in managing supplier relationships and contracts

  • Maintain national supply base and ensure supplier compliance with category standards

  • Contribute to category performance including GP and stock turnover

  • Assist in maintaining Private Label identity and merchandising flows in collaboration with Marketing

  • Execute category flows and ensure implementation of Planograms in stores

  • Maintain product hierarchy and category data integrity

  • Communicate with suppliers regarding rejections, complaints, and DIFOT reporting

  • Monitor product availability, especially during peak and promotional periods

  • Conduct weekly business health checks and submit to Category Buyer

  • Coordinate supplier performance reviews and reporting metrics

  • Work with Planning and Supply Chain teams to optimize stock planning and co-loading

  • Participate in buying meetings and updates to align on category goals

  • Drive product quality and service levels across inbound operations

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE

  • Matric certificate or equivalent

  • A diploma or degree in Supply Chain Management, Business Administration, Economics, or related field is advantageous

  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience in a procurement, junior buying, or supply chain role

  • Background in FMCG retail, category management, or store operations is preferred

  • Understanding of stock governance, supplier negotiation, and inventory planning

KEY COMPETENCIES REQUIRED

  • Strong communication, interpersonal, and problem-solving skills

  • Excellent organizational skills with attention to detail and task prioritization

  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office and supply chain software tools

  • Ability to thrive in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment

  • Strong analytical thinking and commercial acumen

  • Fluency in English (both verbal and written)
