Role Overview
Maersk is seeking an experienced and qualified Maintenance Technician to manage and maintain refrigeration, electrical, and mechanical systems at its cold storage facility in Bellville, Cape Town. This hands-on technical role ensures uninterrupted operations by overseeing equipment integrity, compliance with safety standards, and support during emergency breakdowns. The ideal candidate will bring expertise in CO₂ refrigeration systems, electrical diagnostics, and preventative maintenance.
Key Responsibilities

Conduct routine inspections and preventative maintenance on refrigeration systems, compressors, condensers, evaporators, and cooling tunnels

Diagnose and repair faults in electrical and mechanical systems, including forklifts, conveyor belts, and mobile racking

Calibrate temperature probes to meet HACCP and ISO9001 standards

Execute emergency breakdown repairs to minimize operational disruptions

Maintain equipment logs and report serious issues to the Maintenance Manager

Support facility upgrades and overhauls, working closely with the operations and safety teams

Ensure safe use of tools and equipment while adhering to OHSAS, SANS 10147, and internal safety protocols

Manage inventory of spare parts and maintenance supplies

Work at heights and in cold environments, following all safety procedures

Participate in safety training and uphold food safety and regulatory compliance
Qualifications and Experience
Minimum Education:
-
Diploma or Trade Certification in CO₂ Refrigeration
-
SAQCC Cat A Gas Handling License (CO₂ required)
Experience:
-
2–5 years of relevant experience in a cold storage, logistics, or industrial warehouse environment

Hands-on experience with large mechanical and electrical systems, refrigeration, HVAC, and PLC-based controls
Technical Skills:
-
Expertise in refrigeration systems (including Danfoss controls)

Electrical diagnostics and repair
-
Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS)
-
Welding and fabrication experience is a bonus
Other:

Valid driver’s license (preferred)

Safety Certifications (OHSAS, First Aid/CPR) are advantageous

Able to work under pressure, including weekends and emergency call-outs
-
Physically fit to handle demanding tasks in a cold environment and at heights up to 10 meters
