The Tankwa Karoo National Park, located in a remote and ecologically significant region, offers a unique opportunity for a qualified Handyman to join its team. This role is essential to ensuring that the park’s infrastructure, facilities, and systems are maintained to high operational standards in a rugged and beautiful natural setting.

Role Overview

The successful candidate will report to the Technical Officer and be responsible for performing routine and semi-skilled maintenance tasks across the park. This includes plumbing, electrical work, refrigeration, carpentry, welding, and general repairs of infrastructure such as staff accommodation, tourism buildings, and utility systems.

Please note: Tankwa Karoo National Park is an isolated environment, with the nearest settlement located approximately 130 km from the park. Interested applicants must be comfortable with remote living and working conditions. Staff accommodation will be provided and requires signing a lease agreement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Execute hands-on maintenance tasks including welding, plumbing, electrical work, refrigeration, and civil repairs

  • Conduct routine servicing of borehole pumps, sewer systems, electrical lines, and buildings

  • Transport equipment, materials, and staff as needed and perform vehicle inspections

  • Record and report on maintenance tasks and infrastructure needs daily

  • Monitor and manage tools and equipment inventory

  • Support the planning and scheduling of technical and maintenance operations

  • Assist in stock ordering and supply chain coordination

  • Maintain workplace cleanliness and perform additional ad hoc technical and administrative duties

  • Handle general admin: logbooks, time sheets, stock control, and monthly reporting

  • Work on weekends and public holidays when required

Minimum Requirements

  • Grade 12 / NCV Level 4 or equivalent

  • A valid driver’s license is essential; PDP will be an added advantage

  • 3 years’ practical experience in a technical/maintenance environment

  • Trade certificate (Electrical, Plumbing, Aircon, etc.) will be a strong advantage

  • Strong verbal and written communication skills in English

  • Solid understanding of basic maintenance disciplines: electrical, plumbing, carpentry

  • Working knowledge of the Occupational Health and Safety Act

  • Good administration and inventory management skills

  • Ability to perform under pressure and in isolated, demanding environments
