Currently, EUM is looking to appoint a knowledgeable and detail-oriented Underwriter to join its Pretoria office and support the continued growth and service excellence of the underwriting division.
Role Overview
The Underwriter will be responsible for evaluating insurance applications, making risk-based decisions, maintaining compliance, and liaising directly with clients and brokers. This role demands a firm understanding of insurance principles, attention to detail, and the ability to balance risk assessment with customer service delivery. The successful candidate will also contribute to product development, system improvements, and operational efficiency while adhering to all legal and company standards.
Key Responsibilities

Evaluate insurance applications and renewal requests to determine risk levels and underwriting acceptance

Use sound judgment to make underwriting decisions in line with company policies and risk appetite

Prepare and maintain policy documentation, ensuring accuracy and compliance with legal and regulatory requirements

Liaise with brokers and clients to provide quotations, respond to inquiries, and clarify underwriting terms

Ensure adherence to key compliance frameworks including FAIS, POPIA, and other industry legislation

Analyze underwriting data to identify trends, risk indicators, and opportunities for process improvements

Support the development of underwriting guidelines, workflows, and automation tools

Stay informed about market developments, competitor offerings, and regulatory changes
Qualifications and Experience

Matric / Grade 12 is essential

Minimum of 2–3 years’ experience in a short-term insurance underwriting environment

A tertiary qualification in Finance, Insurance, Risk, or Business Management will be an advantage

RE5 Certification is preferred and may be required for compliance purposes

Strong proficiency in Microsoft Office applications, especially Excel and Outlook

Excellent analytical skills and the ability to interpret complex data

Strong interpersonal and verbal/written communication skills

High level of organization, attention to detail, and ability to meet tight deadlines

Proven track record of client-focused service and problem-solving capability
