Role Overview
Capitec Bank is seeking a highly skilled Cyber Security Engineer to join the Open Banking team at its Stellenbosch headquarters. This is a critical technical role that blends cybersecurity expertise with hands-on software engineering. The successful candidate will take the lead in safeguarding externally-facing products, ensuring secure digital banking experiences, and collaborating directly with the Product Head and CyberSec team.

Your work will be instrumental in building security toolsets, running penetration tests, and proactively defending against threats while enabling Capitec’s growth in open banking solutions.
Key Responsibilities

Design, develop, and maintain security toolsets for digital banking products

Conduct bi-weekly penetration testing to assess and mitigate vulnerabilities

Collaborate with the CyberSec team to monitor and manage security incidents

Integrate secure coding principles throughout software development

Implement systems for continuous threat detection and response
-
Ensure compliance with regulatory and internal security standards
-
Work cross-functionally to balance business needs with cybersecurity best practices

Conduct risk assessments and recommend robust mitigation strategies

Lead threat modeling sessions and security code reviews

Stay updated with emerging cyber threats, vulnerabilities, and countermeasures
Qualifications and Experience
Minimum Education Requirement:
-
Grade 12 National Certificate or equivalent
Preferred Qualification:
-
Relevant tertiary qualification in Cybersecurity, Information Technology, or Software Engineering
Experience Requirements:
-
5+ years of experience in cybersecurity, with practical exposure to software engineering

Experience in designing and implementing security architecture and systems

Proficiency in security-related programming (e.g., Python, Java, C++)

Hands-on experience conducting and analyzing penetration tests

Strong knowledge of network protocols, cloud security, and identity/access management systems

Background in working with cybersecurity tools and threat detection technologies

Demonstrated ability to assess, manage, and resolve security incidents in real time
Technical Knowledge

Cybersecurity best practices and industry standards

Network architecture, protocols, and secure data transfer mechanisms

Identity and Access Management (IAM) platforms

Cloud platforms such as AWS or Azure with a focus on security

Security event monitoring and incident response strategies
