Role Overview
Capitec Bank is hiring an experienced AI Engineer to join its AI and Software Engineering division based in Stellenbosch. This role is ideal for a highly skilled professional with a background in artificial intelligence, machine learning, and generative AI. As an AI Engineer at Capitec, you will be instrumental in building intelligent, scalable, and reliable GenAI-based software products that enhance the banking experience for millions of users.
You will work within a cross-functional team, collaborating with software engineers, data scientists, designers, and product managers to develop AI-powered systems. The role includes responsibilities in the full software development lifecycle—research, design, coding, deployment, and maintenance—with a strong emphasis on performance and scalability.
Key Responsibilities

Design and build advanced AI and machine learning models for various banking applications

Collaborate on the full software development lifecycle of GenAI solutions

Develop scalable microservices and deploy AI-powered features using Docker and Kubernetes

Integrate with information retrieval systems and develop intelligent search functionalities
-
Implement AI workflows that enhance automation, user personalization, and customer experience
-
Guide and mentor team members while resolving engineering challenges and development bottlenecks

Maintain high-quality coding standards and deliver production-ready solutions

Design and consume RESTful APIs for data exchange between services

Stay current with emerging AI tools and technologies to influence future development
Education and Qualifications
Minimum Requirements:
-
Grade 12 National Certificate / Vocational
Preferred:
-
Relevant tertiary qualification in Computer Science, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or a related field
Experience and Technical Knowledge
Required Experience:
-
5+ years of experience in software engineering or AI/ML domains

Minimum 3 years of experience with AI/Machine Learning techniques, model development, and deployment

Hands-on experience with deep learning frameworks such as TensorFlow and PyTorch
-
Experience working with generative models, NLP, and AI-driven systems

Proficiency in Python, Java, or C++

Experience with containerization and orchestration using Docker and Kubernetes

Expertise in cloud computing services (AWS preferred)

Familiarity with messaging systems and microservice architecture
Preferred Knowledge:

RESTful API design principles

Search and information retrieval technologies

Familiarity with large language models (LLMs) and prompt engineering

Continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) best practices
