This position plays a vital role in ensuring the success of underground mining activities through effective drilling, team supervision, and safety compliance.
Role Overview
The Drill Master is responsible for managing and executing high-performance drilling operations in a trackless mining environment. Reporting to the Developer, this role will oversee daily development drilling, supervise drill rig operators, monitor consumable usage, and uphold operational safety in alignment with company and client standards.
This position is specifically open to individuals without a Blasting Certificate, making it a significant career opportunity for experienced drill professionals who excel in underground mechanised mining without holding formal blasting accreditation.
Key Responsibilities

Execute daily development drilling tasks to meet production targets

Supervise drill rig operators and ensure compliance with drilling schedules

Plan, lead, and control drilling operations within allocated sections

Identify and communicate any equipment deficiencies proactively

Monitor usage of consumables such as rods, shanks, and couplings

Perform long anchor drilling, resin bolt installations, and scaling using a drill rig

Ensure compliance with all SHEQ, M&RC, and client-specific procedures

Provide on-the-job training and performance monitoring of junior drill operators

Contribute to safety, productivity, and operational improvements
Minimum Qualifications and Competencies

Grade 12 / NQF Level 4 qualification

Valid Drill Rig Operator Certificate
-
EB Driver’s License – Valid and in good standing
-
Valid Medical Certificate of Fitness for underground work
-
Load Haul Dumper and Dump Truck license (advantageous)
-
Blasting Certificate (advantageous but not required for this role)

Medically fit, including HTS and RFA clearance
-
Good command of English – written and spoken

Computer literacy and ability to complete online training modules

Supervisory, numerical, and job planning capabilities
Experience Requirements

Minimum of 4 years’ underground drilling experience in a trackless mining environment

Strong experience operating Twin Boom Drill Rigs with split feeds
-
Practical experience with drilling weld mesh, split sets, and long anchors
-
Proficient in drilling and installing quick-chem resin bolts using drill rigs
-
Exposure to operating Dump Trucks and Load Haul Dumpers

Proven production record in decline shaft development as a Drill Master

Experience in mechanised bolting and training of junior drill operators

Ability to safely operate in challenging ground conditions

Knowledge of modern mechanised mining techniques and tools
