📋 Role Overview
The Assistant Production Manager: Nursery will support the nursery production team by overseeing the propagation and development of various plant species, including subtropical Eucalyptus and ornamental cuttings. You’ll be responsible for ensuring quality control, managing a team, maintaining optimal environmental conditions, and contributing to nursery infrastructure projects. This role requires a hands-on, proactive manager with deep agricultural knowledge and leadership experience.
🌿 Key Responsibilities

Manage the propagation and production of subtropical Eucalyptus and ornamental cuttings

Oversee the vegetative production of grasses

Ensure adherence to quality standards and compliance protocols

Monitor and manage climate conditions in rooting tunnels for optimal plant development

Supervise the sizing and sorting of forestry cuttings and seedlings
-
Ensure that minimum stock levels are maintained across production lines

Oversee grow-out sections, including irrigation scheduling and disease control

Lead and supervise a production team of approximately 25 employees
-
Record production data and update the nursery management system regularly

Plan, assign, and evaluate daily labour tasks for optimal team productivity

Ensure that all work meets internal quality benchmarks and timelines

Oversee the proper functioning of rooting, hardening, and growing-out areas, including misting systems

Assist with general maintenance and infrastructure projects to support nursery efficiency
🎓 Qualifications and Experience

A Diploma in Horticulture, Agricultural Production, or a related field

At least 5 years of experience in a nursery or agricultural management role

Driver’s license (Code 08) required

Bilingual in English and isiZulu preferred, for effective communication with team members

Strong attention to detail, particularly in monitoring plant health and production output

Proven problem-solving skills and the ability to make informed decisions under pressure

Willingness to work weekends and public holidays when operationally required
