Role Overview
The Department is seeking to appoint an experienced and visionary Director: Mineral Economics. The successful candidate will lead the mineral economics division, providing expert guidance on market trends, regulatory analysis, and investment impacts within the mining and energy sectors.
This is a senior-level position best suited for professionals with a background in economics, finance, or geosciences with economic policy expertise and strategic planning acumen.
Key Responsibilities

Provide strategic economic analysis of mineral markets to inform policy and regulatory decisions.

Monitor global and domestic commodity prices and assess implications for the South African economy.

Guide national investment strategy for the mineral sector and evaluate the financial viability of mineral projects.

Prepare economic reports, briefings, and presentations for executive leadership and stakeholders.

Represent the department in high-level forums and engage with industry, investors, and international bodies.

Lead a team of economists and analysts in data modelling, forecasting, and sectoral impact assessments.

Support the development of policy interventions to ensure sustainability, competitiveness, and inclusivity in the mining sector.
Qualifications and Experience
-
A recognized Bachelor’s Degree (NQF Level 7) or higher in Economics, Finance, Mineral Economics, or related field.

A minimum of 5 years’ experience at middle or senior management level in a mineral economics or policy analysis environment.

Demonstrated experience in mining sector analysis, public policy development, or investment advisory.

Strong understanding of mineral markets, economic modelling, and strategic development frameworks.

Completion of the Nyukela Pre-Entry Certificate for Senior Management (mandatory before appointment).
