Role Overview
Reporting directly to the Pharmacy Manager, the Pharmacist will be responsible for delivering quality pharmaceutical services that align with the hospitalโs commitment to excellence. This role involves medication safety management, quality assurance, financial responsibility, and the mentorship of pharmacy support staff. The ideal candidate is an ethical, detail-oriented professional with a strong clinical background and deep knowledge of pharmaceutical regulations, industry standards, and hospital practices.
Key Responsibilities
Medication Safety Management

Ensure 100% reporting of medication incidents and implement corrective actions to prevent recurrence.

Monitor pharmacy alerts, compile trend analyses quarterly, and initiate appropriate responses.

Promote a culture of medication safety within the hospital, ensuring protocols are followed meticulously.
Quality Management Systems

Ensure pharmacy operations are fully compliant with SAPC, DOH, OHSC, and other relevant statutory and professional standards.

Play an active role in improving customer satisfaction and clinical outcomes by supporting ward and theatre service delivery.

Participate in pharmacy quality assurance and improvement programs, including audits and service-level reviews.
Financial Management

Support the hospitalโs financial goals by helping to control pharmacy costs, monitor procurement processes, and adhere to budgetary targets.

Contribute to the effective management of cost of sales and ensure pharmaceutical expenses align with allocated resources.
Product and Asset Management

Manage stock effectively by reducing losses and optimizing inventory levels.

Ensure proper handling, storage, and system utilisation of pharmaceuticals to reduce waste and ensure product availability.

Foster collaborative relationships with doctors and clinical staff, ensuring their pharmaceutical needs are met timeously and accurately.
People Management

Mentor and train Pharmacist Interns and Pharmacist Assistants, helping to build a strong and capable pharmacy team.

Promote a professional, inclusive, and respectful work environment aligned with healthcare ethics and best practices.
Qualifications and Experience Required

B.Pharm / Dip.Pharm / B.Sc Pharm from a recognized institution.

Current registration with the South African Pharmacy Council (SAPC).

Strong clinical knowledge and the ability to interpret and apply treatment protocols effectively.

In-depth understanding of pharmaceutical legislation, ethical guidelines, and industry regulations.

Proven experience within a hospital or specialist care environment will be advantageous.

Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite and familiar with pharmacy management systems.
